You can pretty much do any search in the Browse tree. (the tree is essentially a set of searches) The tree structure is defined in a configuration file (browse-catalog.xml in ..\geoportal\WEB-INF\classes\gpt\search\browse). Try this example which adds a 'Popular Tags' folder to the browse tree: Insert the following right before </tree> in browse-catalog.xml:

<query></query>

<query>searchText=keywords%3Aservice</query>

<query>searchText=keywords%3Alivedata</query>

<query>searchText=keywords%3Ageographic+boundaries</query>

<query>searchText=keywords%3Anatural+resources+data</query>

<query>searchText=keywords%3Aland+use+data</query>

The geoportal web app works fine within my iPhone browser. Other than that, you could use the REST or CSW service endpoints to the catalog.

So it looks like it gets to loading the geoportal configuration file (gpt.xml) and then soils its pants: "FINE: Loading configuration file: gpt/config/gpt.xml 21-Jul-2011 14:57:21 com.esri.gpt.framework.context.ApplicationContext loadConfiguration SEVERE: An error occured while loading the application configuration. org.xml.sax.SAXParseException: The processing instruction target matching "[xX][mM][lL]" is not allowed." I think it would be worth checking if your gpt.xml got corrupted. The error message looks as if it is interpreting "xml" in the gpt.xml first line as a processing instruction rather than being an XML declaration. The gpt.xml file should start: Essentially, can you confirm that the gpt.xml file contains "well-formed" xml?

short answer: no They are two separate products with different components and code bases. Esri ArcGIS Portal is a commercial product. Esri Geoportal Server is an open source product.

Peter, Really hard to say what is going on from a distance. As a place to start, I would suggest stopping Tomcat moving your old log files to a safe location deleting the Tomcat cache folder: ..\Tomcat\work\Catalina restart Tomcat monitor the gpt log file both *before* calling geoportal from a browser, and after ... stopping when the first error gets thrown and sleuthing down the problem. good luck. keep us posted.

Who knows? Glad it is working for you. My guess in retrospect would be that you did not have the JNDI properly set up. (SEVERE: Exception sending context initialized event to listener instance of class com.sun.faces.config.ConfigureListener com.sun.faces.config.ConfigurationException: no web.xml present) By default, geoportal.war doesn't come packaged to auto-deploy the JNDI file. After you create and edit it, you need to restart Tomcat so it gets recognized as geoportal is starting up.

The problem is not in your authentication mechanism, but in your connection with the database (as specified in the jndi file, geoportal.xml). The error is telling you the geoportal web app cannot make the database connection. Start by tracking down where "MACHINENAME$" is written and change it to a valid machine-name, IP, or DNS entry for your database machine.

I would recommend this book from Esri Press: http://esripress.esri.com/display/index.cfm?fuseaction=display&websiteID=141 Also, check out the white paper and training on GIS System Design Strategies: http://support.esri.com/en/knowledgebase/whitepapers/view/productid/19/metaid/1022 Lastly, the GSDI cookbook has some good content (although it is getting a little "long in the tooth"): http://www.gsdi.org/gsdicookbookindex

We have a web-cam with a mic and will offer a web-cast for those who can't join by phone. Here is the login link: http://esri.adobeconnect.com/sdi-geoportal/ Try using it early as you may need a plug-in download. Hopefully the bandwidth and quality will be good enough. See you there!

sorry, there is no way that i can know your database machine name, port, or SID. If you want to check if your jdbc connection settings work (outside of the log file messages), try using a third party tool like dbVisualizer.

Well for one thing, you are deviating from the documented pre-installation requirements (https://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/geoportal/index.php?title=Preinstallation) by attempting to use Tomcat 7.0 and Oracle Express Edition. To troubleshoot your issue with the database and/or jdbc, I would NOT rely on web app messages, but scrutinize your log file messages. To begin with that: stop Tomcat, clean out the log files, start Tomcat but do nothing (i.e. do not connect to the web app), wait until the gpt.log stabilizes in size, then inspect the log file. If you see an error, try to understand what it is telling you is wrong. If you do not see an error, then open a browser and start interacting with the geoportal until you generate an error in the log file. Then go back and troubleshoot the error from the log file.
