Sort of figured it out (I think). It only wants to create annotation for features that fall into the annotation classes' SQL queries upon creation of the feature. Creating the feature, and then filling in the fields, worked at first but not now. So I had to assign a default value to the fields that the annotation classes are based on. Now it seems to be working again if we create the feature and change the default value to what we need.

Our feature-linked annotation seems to have lost some of its feature linkage ability. We have point data in a file geodatabase and used the 'convert labels to annotation' tool to make a feature-linked annotation layer (saved in the database). This is a 'living' data file and my colleague adds new features once in a while. We tested that adding new point features made new annotation and that editing the label field also updated the annotation text. Everything was good. Today that link has mysteriously broken--new features don't make new anno, and updating the point's label attribute doesn't update the anno. The annotation layer still shows the relationship class so I don't know what could be wrong. Moving points does move the anno so it's retaining the offset info. Deleting points also deletes anno but creating points doesn't create anno. For a couple days I've been moving the annotation to be visually pleasing (1/3 done of about 2000 anno's) but nothing major--just scooting, rotating, and adding leaders. Did I break it and how can I restore the linkage? ArcMap 10.0, ArcInfo license. Edit to add related info--I have a test anno layer that is nearly identical but without the annotation classes. It's the layer I played around with before starting the real one. (This is my first project with annotation, so I fiddled with settings using the test layer.) The test layer has retained its linkage and updates everything correctly--but only upon exiting the edit session. I think the only difference between the test anno layer and the real anno layer is that the real one has annotation classes and those are styled with my own settings.

You can insert pictures as page objects and put them over the symbols in your legend.

What Chris said, except I recommend making your new custom symbols from inside the Style Manager. If you make the symbol from inside layer symbology, then that symbol lives inside the mxd and it adds extra steps to use it in other maps. If you make it through the Style Manager and save it into a style file and it'll be easy to add it to any map, just like the ESRI symbols.

It's totally doable. I've used it to visually 'combine' elevation datasets without actually mosaicking them. In the symbology tab go down to where it says stretch type and change it from Standard Deviations to Minimum-Maximum. That brings up a check box next to the max/min values at the top, called Edit High/Low Values. Tick it on and type in your desired max & min values that the stretch is based on. That will override the usual stretch based on the data and stretch it however you want.

How many maps do you have? Do you want to sketch them in by hand (using the Editor tools) or automatically (with Raster tools)? The first thing that pops to mind is similar to Richard's comment about upping the contrast. Doing Reclassify would allow the boundary line to become more distinct. Then some of the raster to vector tools may be helpful. Have you asked over in Imagery & Raster Data?

(Correction from my prior statement that the context menu only worked on the last vertex, it actually works on any vertex). Good to know. It's been a while since I did any new sketching so I couldn't remember. Thanks.

Many thanks for your response. It is certainly of help. I am wondering, on a more basic level, if there is a quicker way to identify the name of a colour using the RGB values through the Eye Dropper tool. At present I am obtaining the RBG values and doing a CTRL + F in a doc. to find the name. Thanks So you want the Eye Dropper to say "Peach" instead of RGB numbers? I can't think of anything besides writing up your own custom Eye Dropper. If you're only doing this once in a while then it's probably easiest to keep with your current method. But for many or all features in a layer, if you can get the RGB values into the attribute table then you could join color names from your document. (Copy from Word to Excel, do text to columns and format it all nice, then table join.)

This confounded me for the longest time too but it turned out to be really simple. 🙂 If you hover the mouse over the vertex and right click there should be an option to delete vertex while you are still sketching. IIRC I think this only works in reverse order, like you can't skip back to the middle but you can delete each one in order back to the middle.

Here's the help topic on making contours. If you have already tried the Contour tool and it doesn't recognize your raster then investigate why not. See if it recognizes other rasters you have (elevation or otherwise) and look for any differences in the data that would cause the tool not to recognize the NED data. Like format (grid, tiff, sid) etc. Also with the Contour tool open you can expand a little help menu to the side that I often find more useful than the online help topics. It gives you information about what it's looking for in each field the tool asks for. For me this has been very useful troubleshooting when a tool doesn't recognize my data.

I was about to suggest clipping it to a donut polygon as suggested here but can't get it to maintain the donut. However if you have Spatial Analyst you could turn the donut polygon into a raster with zero values wherever you want the image removed and one values for what to keep. Then use Raster Calculator to multiply the original raster with the clip raster. A brute force method if nothing else works is to chop up your larger image into small pieces that go around your smaller image, then mosaic them back together.
