In 2020, ArcGIS Workflow Manager introduced a service-based implementation pattern that allows users to connect to a service for web-centric workflows. We continue to release new capabilities in this pattern and now have a new and refreshed product page that describes the value propositions, use cases and features available in this service-driven implementation pattern. Check out the page! Interested in learning more? Complete the Contact Us form on this page or email workflowmanager@esri.com.

"We'd like to understand why Data Reviewer’s error management and reporting capabilities aren't being used by majority of our respondents." For our versioned editing environment, we are only reviewing new/modified records in the editor's version so we just store the results in a file GDB. If the user doesn't resolve errors of severity 1 or 2, the version is not posted. Long term tracking of errors didn't make much sense when we designed the system, although we have since implemented an annual review of the dataset. It might make sense to track them from there - maybe when we take a look at our overall architecture and workflows as we roll into Pro.

ArcGIS Workflow Manager has added a new service-driven implementation pattern which exists in parallel with the geodatabase implementation pattern - referred to as “(Classic)” in documentation and My Esri. The two implementation patterns are separate and not technologically compatible. The new service-driven implementation focuses more on web-based workflows, data editing involving the Utility Network, Parcel Fabric or Linear Referencing, and automated processes while the geodatabase implementation is focused on cartographic mapping. This blog provides information on how the new implementation pattern is licensed and license migration details for existing Workflow Manager customers. Below is the detailed description of both implementation patterns and how they are licensed. Service-based architecture Introduced at 10.8.1, the new service-based architecture allows users to connect to a service for web-centric workflows through the Workflow Manager Web app to manage, design, and run workflows. In addition, this pattern has workflow automation and extensibility opportunities and an ArcGIS Pro extension. There are several components, and each is licensed in the style needed for the software they enable. ArcGIS Workflow Manager user type extension that works with ArcGIS Enterprise. ArcGIS Workflow Manager Server Standard is included with a user type extension at no cost. ArcGIS Workflow Manager Advanced requires a separate purchase, in addition to ArcGIS Enterprise. ArcGIS Workflow Manager extension to ArcGIS Pro which requires a separate purchase and includes a user type extension at no cost. Classic implementation connecting to an enterprise geodatabase This pattern has existed for many years and has a desktop and a server component. The server component requires the Workflow Manager server extension to be installed on top of ArcGIS Server. The Workflow Manager Classic Pro component is embedded in ArcGIS Pro. For those customers who are using ArcMap, the ArcMap component requires the Workflow Manager Desktop extension to be installed on top of ArcMap and a Workflow Manager ArcMap license. The UI and documentation for this pattern have been updated to include “(Classic)” to distinguish from the new service-based UI and documentation. Workflow Manager (Classic) Server extension is licensed as an extension in the Server Manager. The Workflow Manager ArcGIS Pro extension license enables both the Workflow Manager service-based and geodatabase functionality in ArcGIS Pro. Esri introduced a service-based implementation pattern of ArcGIS Workflow Manager A service-based architecture provides a more robust system for managing work across users and the organizations’ GIS environment to support distributed workforce, web-based processes, and more, and benefits users in the following ways. User type extensions allow users to connect to a service for web-centric workflows You will be able to use web-based processes for submission and approval, data editing, and integrating web applications within workflows Enables and empowers your organization’s workforce to follow standardized processes Allows you to organize your workforce and tasks for your entire GIS environment Improves productivity and data quality to ensure operational success of your GIS Improves efficiency and increases data reliability Reduces downtime and cuts operational expenses with integrated communication and accountability tools to enhance team performance Provides real-time operational awareness The workflow delivers everything the user needs - tools, applications, and data. Automates repetitive manual tasks Available wherever you work For customers who primarily use geodatabase-deployed workflows you can continue to use your Workflow Manager (Classic) Server extension with your Workflow Manager (Classic) Desktop extension. For those interested in the service-driven implementation pattern, please note that because both patterns are significantly different technologies, workflows created using Workflow Manager (Classic) will need to be redefined in the service-based implementation. Customers who currently license ArcGIS Workflow Manager (Classic) Desktop will see ArcGIS Workflow Manager user type extension and ArcGIS Workflow Manager Server Standard automatically added to your My Esri. Please note that the service-driven version of Workflow Manager is currently available for ArcGIS Enterprise deployments only. In order to use this new architecture, you will need to license Workflow Manager Pro through ArcGIS Enterprise. If you have a product that includes ArcGIS Workflow Manager (Classic) you are also eligible to get the Workflow Manager user type extension as per the above described license entitlement which will automatically appear on your MyEsri. For questions about licensing changes, contact your customer service representative. For questions about which of the two types of implementations is a good fit for your needs, reach out to your account manager. If your organization has an Enterprise agreement, please reach out to your account manager and customer service representative.

In the latest release, ArcGIS Maritime delivers new capabilities that: Search unverified features Keep a record of all deleted features for quality control Validate a dataset, or a part of a dataset, using the IHO S-58 validation standard, and much more. The new S-57 geoprocessing tool copies features from a layer or multiple layers to a target geodatabase and also finds S-57 structure-equipment and collection relationships from the source layers. For information on the latest updates, see the Maritime section of the What’s New in ArcGIS Pro topic.

Solving real world problems is the Esri way, and ArcGIS Indoors embodies it! Read a great advocacy StoryMap by the Michigan State University to solve some very real, every day problems they faced when navigating around campus, which can be daunting for anyone new to campus and even for campus veterans. MSU had been doing GIS outside the building for years. Conversations now needed to happen about referencing and exploring how they could extend the Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) inside the building! Find out how ArcGIS Indoors stepped in!

With the 10.9 release of ArcGIS Maritime server extension, the Custom Chart Builder (CCB), formerly known as Products On Demand (PoD), has the ability to customize symbology so that users can replace traditional S-52 ECDIS symbology with their own custom INT1 symbols. Custom Symbology, using SVG-based symbols, is available with 10.9 CCB With this new capability you can now generate paper nautical charts on-the-fly, directly from the latest S-57 data, while still supporting your traditional paper chart symbology. For more information about ArcGIS Maritime server, and the Custom Chart Builder, visit us online, or contact us directly at maritime@esri.com

These are bathymetric expressions, not side scan sonar images, used for identifying boat-like shapes from gridded #BAG data. Note that this type of bathymetry identification is indicative of what can be done with repeatable patterns in the high-resolution source grids, regardless of the type of object being identified. Often, the hardest part of a machine learning tool is finding a good data set with which to train the engine; in this case, the NY State data set was ideal, as so many boats were sunk in Hurricane Sandy and NOAA did a survey right after the destruction.
