I feel kind of foolish asking this question..... When you search for a location does this cost credits? One would assume not, but then again getting directions cost credits (a service that is free in google maps) so I thought I may as well ask the question.

Did you make your data editable? The button won't appear otherwise I don't think. You do this by changing the editing properties on the items description page.

Can someone confirm that these new tools cost credits? Is it possible to have a account user type where no functions that cost credits can be accessed - apart from the basics incurred from viewing existing content? That would be a useful role to have !

OK that's clear, thanks. And just to be clear for scenario 2 where my shapefile is saved in the web map, in the cloud.....seeing as it does not appear in my contents as either a shapefile or a hosted feature service, am I am paying any credits for it's storage and data transfer when I view it? Just curious!

I am trying to work out how shapefiles behave in ArcGIS Online.... Scenario 1 If I add a zipped shapefile to My Contents, i.e. push it to the cloud, I am not able to add this to a map. Only once it has been published as a hosted service it is accessible to me in an ArcGIS Online web map. Correct? Scenario 2 If I am in the default web map and bring in a zipped shapefile stored locally on my computer using "add layer from file" - I can save this map with the shapefile in it. As far as I can tell this shapefile is now in the cloud because if I delete the source file on my computer, I can still see it in the map. Does this mean the shapefile is now a hosted service? I do not see a shapefile or published feature service in 'my contents'? Can anyone shed any light on this for me?

It could be that your site is configured so that this option is disabled. Anyone with the role 'administrator' should be able to confirm this for you.

1. This sounds like an error - I think you should have access to multiple basemaps even in a trail situation. Maybe you can search for basemaps as a workaround. 2. This helps page explains how to import a shapefile http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/arcgisonline/#/Adding_files_from_your_computer/010q00000076000000/

Do you get an error message? If you are uploading a zipped shapefile I found this workflow caused problems: 1. export the shapefile 2. create a folder 3. move shapefile into folder 4. zip folder But this workflow worked: 1. export the shapefile 2. select the shapefile components and zip (without moving to a folder first)

Did you check your site configuration settings to see if anonymous access is enabled or disabled. Even if it is disabled an Administrator will still see the option to share with 'everybody' (whereas those with user or publisher role will not)- but even if the Adminsitrator checks the 'share with everyone' option for an individual item I don't think it will actually be shared with everyone unless this setting is enabled....?

Thanks for your reply. Yes everyone is saying go to 10 - which I'm sure will cure all my problems (!) - but.....I don't have 10 yet! As per your suggestions we have accessed the file without any issues in ArcMap so the source file seems to be fine. I copied the grid to the C drive to ensure there were no locks - I get the same error message. I added the definition file to ArcMap and do get a boundary/footprint but the image is black/ all 'no data' - I couldn't see an option to do a 'build' in ArcMap and ArcCatlog? I'm about ready to go to take this up with customer support now....but one last question... ****If anyone can answer this question I'd be most grateful**** Can a GRID created in 10 can be worked with in 9.3 Image Server? Thanks Tim

Hello again - I am creating an image service using standalone Image Server 9.3 for the first time and the process has been at "step 5 of 8 - adding raster datasets to the image service" for over 18 hours now - has it stalled/crashed? I am working with a DEM: - 13 GB - read only (just noticed this - is it relevant?) - in ESRI GRID format created in ArcMap 10 (will this work with 9.3 Image server? how do I know if this is an ASCII or Binary format?) **** SOMETIME LATER.... OK I ended the process and started fresh - I think I specified the format incorrectly the first time. Now the process runs all the way through real quickly...and fails! I have copied the error message below. OK so after a little experimentation here is a revision of the summary above: A) Spatial Join - point to point using distance option = reports on the single nearest feature OUTPUT = new feature class B) Near = reports on the single nearest feature (with additional attributes x,y and angle) OUTPUT = appended to input feature class C) Point Distance = reports on all points within the specified distance. OUTPUT = new table D) Generate Near Table = reports on the specified number of points within the specified distance (with additional attributes x,y and angle) OUTPUT = new table

Can anyone tell me how I can quickly confirm which one of these two products is installed! I am a desktop specialist with no server experience and am working with image server /arcgis server for the very first time. It's 9.3.1 so could be either one right? If the definitions files are '.ISDef' does that mean it's the old standalone product? Or does this mean they were created in a 9.3.1. product regardles of whether it was the standalone or new extension? What is the file extension for a mosaic dataset and do these only come into play with 10.0? Thanks Tim

Can anyone tell me if I have the correct understanding of the differences between the following tools/techniques: 1) Join point to point using distance option = reports on the single nearest feature. 2) Point Distance = reports distance for all features within radius. 3) Near = as per 2 but reports additional attributes (x,y and angle). 4) Generate Near Table = as per 3 but generates result in new table. Also is there a simple way to generate a set of lines using the origin point and the x,y (and angle if needed) attributes of the nearest point? Thanks
