Yes there are a lot of different values I need to replace of varying lengths (see the parts of the text strings beginning with ‘DH’ or the one with ‘E DH’….) I haven’t worked with Python Dictionaries. Could you give me an example of what you are talking about?

Stephen, Thanks for your efforts but I have been married to MS Excel for the last 4 days!!! =0 The main reason I was posting on the ArcGIS Forum is that I wanted to hope beyond all hope that maybe there is a VBA or Python script out there that would do what I’m trying to do in MS Excel? Sheet 2 of Naplables0403 is closer to what I am wanting. I can do nested SUBSTITUTE functions to replace the text strings but I can’t get one set of SUBSTITUTE functions to repeat because somehow its text-string specific. i.e., DH 00.334 can only be deleted from the first text string, but even if I put an instance number of 2 (where I’m hoping the second string can be replaced), it doesn’t do that—it only replaces the text its referring to! Perhaps a better way of putting this is how can I replace substrings of text of varying lengths with spaces between varying locations of spaces?? As in: Aaa bbb ccc ddd eee fff Would result in Aaa bbb eee fff But then AAA BBB CCC DD EEE FF GGG Could result in AAA BBB CCC FF GG Daniel T. I have a field in a .dbf file with a long text string. I need to delete x amount of characters WITHIN the text string. I am also not very good with programming so I haven't looked into creating a script. Essentially I have this: aaa bbb ccc ddd eee fff ggg What I need is this: aaa bbb ccc fff ggg I'm attaching the .dbf in MS Excel format (.xls). I have had some luck with functions in MS Excel but I can't get the consistency I need.

Is there a Help Document on Rules For Text Strings and their formats in Text fields in dbf files? I have to do a lot of merging of files with a text string field and all to frequently I get error message 001156 regarding something in the text string I put in the text field and I go bonkers trying to figure out what it is. I have been able to figure some things on my own but this is still a pain in the butt to have to go through. I have tried various queries in Help but nothing gets at what I'm talking about. I have been able to fix errors like the ones below in the past (consistent character string recognition from one database to another) but then when I thought I'd figured it out things like the ones in the pics still come up. Also: Why is it when I am adding a Text field to a dbf file if I indicate a certain number of characters, after it becomes a part of the dbf file, it automatically goes to 255, even if I use the default of 50 when I am initially naming the Text field??? As in, why should I have to indicate what my field length is when I get this instead?

Thanks big time for commenting, but I could use an illustration of what you’re getting at but what do you mean by transparency setting when popups don’t cover the object unless its by accident? (I will say have had that experience with file in Google Earth where I’ve had to drag them aside because they get to be so big with all the relevant attributes I have for the object I want to show). I’ve got some illustrations of what I want to get at. I also did have an ESRI dude help me out and did create a version of an app that worked but I don’t want to share it right now because of the overhead (other non native softwares) that was involved for something that should have been ESRI-centric/oriented.

I do an extensive amount of editing of shapefile databases (.dbf) format for Quality Control with numerous attributes in MS Excel for compatibility with shapefiles in ArcGIS 10.6.x. While I clearly see the need for maintaining a high quality end product (shapefile to be used with other applications) this is also frustrating and is leads to a larger amount of time for achieving my end result. I have a number of questions for this subject, but one of them is this: How do I maintain the same order of fields in MS Excel 97-2003 that I have in the .dbf in ArcGIS? As in: ArcGIS: a b c d MS Excel: d b a c Thank you, Mr. Excel

I have heard the term is Feature Extraction… Thanks for this too, Ted, this is very useful, although I would have thought it wouldn’t be that hard to do? But I will say that I have done some research and I have seen how other State DOTs or larger jurisdictions have done Multi Grade intersection layers with postmiles that may be similar to what I want but I just thought I’d try ESRI’s Forums first. Will check out the articles soon. Daniel Brenner

If other types of features like bridges can be extracted from Google Earth, why couldn’t Overpasses and Underpasses be identified? Or do I have to use another type of imagery to do extraction? I could be wrong but wouldn’t I also have a sense I’d need to use a Z factor since I’m working with a three dimensional scenario? Daniel T. Ted, I will go to my corner now and let my GIS career rot on the vine... The first part is essentially what I have for the Overpass/Underpass classification. The situation I have is not about bridges and selecting points within a buffer isn’t relevant either because I am working with an Intersection Points layer based highway Postmiles created by a Dynamic Segmentation application using the California State Highway System. I do manual identification once I have the Points layer created based on Postmiles. I don’t have Roads and Highways yet, and you would think the tools in ArcGIS Pro would be able to detect and classify types of intersections but essentially they are high end graphics tools and not related to the spatial data (i.e., Lat/Long point location). If Bridges and other features can be extracted from imagery, why isn’t there a way to do feature extraction from Google Earth? Or can I only use another type of imagery? Daniel T. Dan: See attached for what I am trying to do. Yes, your last point is correct (same also goes for Underpass). 1. I don’t have ArcGIS Pro at work although I could get it at home. 2. Direction DOES NOT matter. 3. I have seen the links that you are talking about with Pro but how would they automatically detect Overpass and Underpass? It might be on our end that we need to upgrade our Postmile Validation Wizard tool to integrate intersection types into it but I cannot speak to whether or not updates will happen soon. Daniel T. I have a highways layer and a non state routes layer (roads) that I am using to create an intersection points layer. I am then putting the points layer on top of Google Earth and manually identifying highway overpasses and underpasses, I would like to think there is a way to automate this or are there functions in ArcGIS that relate to it? Will send screenshots upon request.

No worries if this doesn't work I'll go back to being an intern at 50 but here goes: I am interested in creating a couple of Model Builder type apps based on State Highways, ramps, and non Highway routes that would create an intersection points layer. I am curious if Model Builder can work with multiple formats of data as well as integrate custom applications and their end results as part of the procedure? Basic workflow for bigger apps: 1) IN ArcGIS 10.6.x create Intersection points layer based on State Highways intersecting roads and add X/Y coordinates from ArcTool Box Features options. (Would also be nice to add Intersection Points layer using System Highway Ramps layer to create points layer for intersections with roads, but can see this not being possible due to different attributes in Ramps layer and non-compatibility with Intersection tool?) 2) Export dbf file of points layer to .csv to be used in custom State Highways system application (Conversion tool that converts X/Y (Latitude/Longitude values) to create Odometer and State Highway System Postmile values database in .csv format. (Application is based on State Highway segments and uses Dynamic Segmentation to create postmile and Odometer values) 3) Edit .csv file in MS Excel 97-2003 to delete extraneous fields and put in required fields of DYNSEG_PRE, DYNSEG_SUF, and DYNSEG_PM (equal to Dynamic Segmentation Postmile). CSV file will have Postmile fields for intersections on BOTH Right and Left side of State Highway network. Save file (if desired name file with side of Route (e.g StRte###_PMOdom_Right.csv) and then save as .csv file. 4) Add .csv file to ArcGIS 10.6.1. Run through Postmile Validation Wizard (also based on Dynamic Segmentation and postmile values in State Highway network) to create Points layer with Postmile Values. 5) Open original .csv file from #2 and edit so that DYNSEG_PM vales are from other side of route (i.e. if original DNYSEGM_PM values were from right side, then copy-paste left values to DYNSEG_PM field) and save with name of file for other side of route (e.g., StRte###.PMOdom_Left.csv) and do same procedure in #4 (add to ArcGIS and use Postmile Validation Wizard tool). Will send screen shots if need be but the core thing are whether multiple Non GIS apps can be used? Can guess that this isn't a one button-does-everything given that I'm working with a couple of custom apps and I need to do editing to create requisite filed(s) for other custom apps. Will send screenshots upon request.
