Thanks for the quick response. I guess I didn't ask what I thought I was asking. I want the symbology to reflect the data frame's symbology too. Can I just change the symbology in the main frame and then have it change the others as well or is they independent of each other that way? Hi there! They're independent. But you can change the symbology of the one layer from other data frame by importing it from the main data frame. In the Symbology tab > Click Import > Specify the layer fro the Main Data Frame that you want to copy the symbology from. 🙂

Hi Leonard, I thought of doing that. The problem is that the points have attributes associated with them (wind speeds) that get lost if I dissolve during the buffering process. Is there any other way? How about the Tabulate Intersection tool. Have you tried it yet? I think this is what you need. http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.2/index.html#//000800000044000000

I have two files: US mainland counties + points which have been buffered by 10 miles (resulting in a polygon file). Ultimately, I would like to calculate the intersection area between each point and each county (assuming it's non-zero). I tried using the "Intersect" tool combined with the Geometry calculator for this, BUT the buffered points also overlap with each other sometimes. Intersect seems to calculate the intersections of all features, not just those in different files. So I end up with tiny tiny areas. Any suggestions for how to get around this problem? I have way too many points to do them one-by-one, so the buffers will invariably overlap. Hi there! Did you run the Buffer yourself? You can set the Dissolve Type to All in the Buffer Wizard to remove all the overlap in your buffers. After that, you can then use the Intersect and Geometry Calc again and see if the result will be different. Let me know if this works for you. 🙂

It is not a coordinate system problem. I have two parcel shapefiles and the edges are slightly off. Note, that I am a newer student of the software. Is there a method to align the entire shapefile at once? Hi! You can use the Trace tool in Editor Toolbar or the Align features to shape in Advance Editing toolbar. See this link for additional info http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.2/index.html#//01m800000004000000 🙂 You can also create and use map topology to ensure that they align well. Detailed discussion here http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#//01mm0000000r000000

Hi, I am working with a polygon layer of forest. I need this layer to be simplified. However no matter which algorithm or how big offset I use in Simplify Polygon tool the resulting layer contains filled holes in polygon even though they are definitely bigger to be ok with the offset (which i tried to set even for 50 meters). And moreover some holes are left as they were. I am including and image with both layers. Is there any way how to make things working well? (that means keep the holes) Thanks for any hint. PS: The layer is really containing just one multipart polygon. Have you tried running the check/repair geometry tool to that feature class? I'm suspecting geometry errors cause this kind of behavior.

Hello, My map grid is interfering with the text on my map, that is, it is layered on top of the text. I was wondering if anyone has a method of ordering the grid so the text/annotation falls on top of the grid. Alex Broadbent Hi Alex! My workaround to that is to convert the grid into graphics on Grids Tab of the Layer Properties, Ungroup the converted graphics and then play with the ordering of that specific grid line that's interfering with your annotation (send to back maybe). Another way is to apply mask in that specific annotation but it's up to you as the cartographer. 🙂 Let me know if the first one worked.

Hello, I have a large point layer representing addresses of users of a public service. In the case of buildings, I have stacked points, one for each user. I want to unify overlapping points (one point feature), and create a relationship between the building footprint and a non-spatial table containing rows for each user. I need to select only the points that overlap with other points (the number of overlapping points is variable) and I tried to do it by creating a topology rule "Must Not Overlap", but when validating the topology I get the following error: "Validate Topology failed. A failure was detected inside the topology engine overlay processor. [error id: 220]". This is because my point feature class has many coincident points and a very large number of topology errors are generated. So, is there a simple way to select points that overlap eachother within the same layer? Thanks in advance. Hi there! Maybe you can try the Collect Events tool. It creates another feature class but its main function is to dissolve coincident points. You may still need to change the symbology because the immediate output is symbolized using graduated symbols. For additional questions you can visit this site http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.2/index.html#//005p0000003s000000.

Maybe it's not the Trace tool that has a problem. Usually data alignment issues is caused by difference in the map projections and transformations in the data frame.

You may want to try running the Check/Repair Geometry Tool to see if there are feature geometry errors. I encountered this kind of error regarding topology and repairing the feature geometry errors fixed it. Let me know if the same goes with yours.

Do you already have the latest patch regarding shapefile crash? I would suggest that you install that one too. You can find it here http://support.esri.com/en/downloads/patches-servicepacks/view/productid/160/metaid/2026 🙂

I am using ArcGIS 10.1 and I want to create a simple polygon. I did not see the production feature builder toolbar when I pointed to customize and toolbars. What can I do to have these toolbars thus the Production Editing toolbar and the Production Feature Builder thanks Do you have Production Mapping extension? If so, maybe it's just not enabled. See extensions. 🙂

Because if i want to increase or decrease the number of cells in it can i do it.....??like we do ir in MS word..... Yes you can. Just re-run the tool, set number of rows and columns that will result to your desired number of cells. If you set a specific number of rows and columns in the wizard, I think you should also set the cell size width and height to 0. ArcGIS will compute it automatically depending on the rows and columns you've set. Is this what you're looking for? 🙂

Hi there! Based on your data, what you can do is join the two tables, make a new field on your building polygon for the relative height, and then field calculate relative heights based on the values from your point features. I assume these two tables have fields common to each other like building ID/name etc. to be used as join fields. If they have, your problem is solved. You can then extrude them in ArcScene using the new field for relative height. Hope this helps. 🙂
