I know this is an old thread now, but did you ever resolve this? I'm having almost the same issue with 10.2, but it just started after the last database compress. Issue logged with support, but I thought I'd see if it was ever resolved. Thanks, Gavin

Hi all I have an ArcSDE 10.0 server running on SQLServer 2005 (Win Server 2008). It's currently set up as a member of a workgroup rather than a domain as we had been running in a Novell environment (don't laugh) until a few months back. Now IT has a domain and active directory working, so I've been told I need to migrate the server to their new domain and work towards using Windows Authentication and single sign on. Currently, almost all SQLServer users including 'sa', 'sde', and our one and only data owner are using SQLServer authentication. The only exceptions to this are 'BUILTIN/Administrators' and 'NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM' which are using Windows Authentication as accounts on the local server. There are 3 others along the lines of 'GISDE2\SQLServer2005MSFTEUser$GISDE2$MSSQLSERVER', but I suspect those are unused as GISDE2 was the original name of the server (now changed) when I was building it and moving from 9.3.1 to 10 (and SDE has been running fine since 2011 this way). Anyway, in moving onto the new domain, I am thinking I can leave the various SDE Authentication accts alone other than those of the end users (which I will drop and re-add as Windows Auth users- none own SDE data) and also leave alone the local Windows Authentication users. I'm hoping just to migrate our end users' accts to Windows Authentication once I move the server to it's new domain. I'm hoping this would allow me to avoid making a lot of changes or having reinstall SQLServer or SDE. Since my background is GIS and I'm just a hack with all the network/DBA stuff, I'm wondering if anyone has any words of wisdom on how to approach this? Of course i will test all of this on a VM image of the SDE server before doing anything dumb with the production server, but would appreciate any time saving guidance you all have to offer. Thanks, Gavin

Thanks Mike I'd have to involve IT in setting up a proxy, so that decreases my motivation a bit... None of the criteria listed apply in my case, so I figured a proxy was not required. I appreciate the feedback and may tackle it when I have more urgent needs. Right now we're just playing with the various Web mapping solutions (Silverlight, Flex, Java) trying to decide which way to jump. Thanks, Gavin

Thanks Mike I am indeed inside the firewall and on the local network, but as I said the maps work fine on AGOL so I would think my PC has all required acces. I used Fiddler with the map that generates the error I noted and there were zero errors. I then created a new AGOL map with just the public basemap and no local services. I swapped out the webmap Id and now get an error (webpage error not fiddler): "unable to create map: aborted the sign in process to avoid sending password over insecure connection" There are no credentials with this public service, so not sure what passwd is being referenced. Maybe my PC is just tired from a long week... cheers, Gavin

Hi all I created an ArcGIS Online map, shared it public, and then downloaded the basicviewer template. I followed the directions to unzip and copy the files to my AGS server. I can view the default map in that viewer just fine, but when I switch the map Id to any one of the arcgis.com maps, I have no luck. The result is just a blank screen or an error that says Unable to create map : '"this._url.query' is null or not an object" depending on which map I use. I've reproduced the error with several different maps, including a very basic one that I just created as a test. Note that my Arcgis online maps use one public service (non esri) as a basemap and 2 non-secured local map services that are behind our firewall. The maps all work just fine using the arcgi.com site. Has anyone run into this issue? Ideas? Thanks, Gavin

Hi Mike Being a utility with critical information that we cannot be without in the event of a disaster or otherwise (i.e. the "cloud" is unavailable), we're very unlikely to ever edit or maintain our data in the cloud. More realistically, we will continue to edit our data locally, with existing tools and workflows, and would want to push those changes to the cloud as a copy. We already do this internally as some editing occurs on SDE, some on PGDBs/FGDBs, some in access or xlsx files, etc. A lot is done in SAP that then flows to GIS as well. Then we have processes that push all of these changes to our local SDE. The expectation that similar agencies would change their ways and host all of this info in the cloud is somewhat unlikely in my own opinion. It would be good to hear that ESRI is working towards a way to easily update the cloud with relevant local data as that would be most useful. Another suggestion is to keep in mind that many of us cannot or will not want to host our data somewhere outside of our control. I don't know that we would put our utility network anywhere but our own servers due to privacy issues. I'm (slowly) discovering that I can point to our local map services using ArcGIS online and make a map with cloud resources, but using local data. Anyone can then see my map, but not the local data unless they are on our network. Ex. I just created a map using ArcGIS Online and pointing only to local map services. I then moved that to mobile using the JSON and can see it on an iPad on the local network. Once I figured it out, it only took moments to have a running iPad map. I think this is a good model that should be explored further. I'd really like to be able to add a basic search by attributes tool or similar without a ton of work. Anyway, thanks for listening! cheers, Gavin

Thanks for the feedback Mike. Can you give some basic idea of how these new services would work? For example, will it be like a cloud based ArcGIS for Server in which I would publish a map service from an mxd? Meaning I would make a copy of my data and mxd to the cloud and then have some control of that service? I'm planning to listen to the ArcGIS Online for Organizations at the end of the month- is this "subscription" the same thing? Thanks, Gavin

Hi all We've build a web map to show our active construction projects. It's simply a basemap and the construction layer which was added as a zipped shp. This latter layer will need to be updated on some schedule (i.e. monthly). Since I spent 20-30 minutes configuring the symbology, pop-ups, etc, I'm wondering if there is any way to simply replace the shp with a new one having more current data? Schema and all would remain exactly the same. All I can seem to do is add the new layer, reconfigure it again, and delete the old one. Ideally I want to hand the process off to the Engineer that owns the data, but it's a hard sell if he also has to configure it every time. Thanks, Gavin

Thanks Mike The 1st link is pretty much what I was looking for, but the 2nd link does not work for me? As for the info in the 1st link, that does the trick, but accessing that section of help from the 'help' dropdown in the viewer requires 4-5 mouse-clicks even when I know where I'm going. If I click on 'About using Web Maps' in the overview section where you are directed from the help button, the 1st thing I see is about sharing web maps. The general user I am thinking about wouldn't even understand what sharing web maps means. Again referring back to the "my mom as a user" example, navigating that help menu just to learn the basics of using the map is a bit much and might be a deterrent. It could be useful if there were a direct link from the viewer to that page or similar called "how to use this map". Just a thought as I know some people give up easily and are better off spoon-fed. All that said, we're finding ArcGIS Online to be a great tool. Thanks for your time to respond. cheers, Gavin

As we explore ArcGIS Online to push a few very basic maps out to our public, I've been asked by every non-GIS reviewer (i.e. our public information officer) where the help info can be found. Of course I see there is a help dropdown in the page, but that leads me to help info that seems more geared towards someone making a new map or editing a map (a lot of info to sort through). Is there a simple help section for the non-technical end user somewhere? I'd like to be able to point my 70 year old mother at the map and have her be able to figure out how to navigate without assistance. For example: - without exploring on my own, how would I know to Shift-drag a box to zoom in? - How do I know to click the 'show map legend' button to see what the symbols mean? - How do I know the 'show contents of map' button will let me see and turn on/off layers? - how do I know clicking on a feature triggers an identify function? As a long time GISer, I'm able to figure this out by clicking buttons. However, a lot of our constituents are older and often afraid to just click around and explore. Seems like it would be ideal to have some type of quick reference page available to get people started. Apologies if I'm just missing it and it's already there... Thanks, Gavin

Hi all I'd like to also add that a few other basic functions would be nice, such as a 'previous extent' button and a map scale box where you could see the exact numeric scale or enter a new value. Also, the Gui to build a 'search by attributes' task is invaluable. Our users have come to expect these behaviors. The Web ADF app builder in v10 AGS Manager was finally to the point where it included all the basic tool requirements to make a web map truly useable in a production environment with zero customization. It would be ideal if a comparison of the SL Builder (and Flex as well) would be made to the old Web ADF builder and all the same basic tools baked in. Perhaps it just hasn't matured yet as pre-10 releases of the Web ADF builder were also missing some basic tools, so we have our fingers crossed. Thanks, Gavin

Just in case anyone else is struggling with this, ESRI support helped out with a simple solution that works great for overriding the Min Resolution. I still want to find a way to turn off the basemap at some scale, but big step in the right direction. cheers ----- The DEV team actually put this online as a sample. There's a good description of the tools purpose. Map Scale Settings Add-In http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=0b2c8fcac5624bdd92f9fef15fdb96ef This is an add in that will allow you to set the minumum and maximum scale on a per-layer basis. Thanks Dominique- Feeling a bit undergunned here, but I'm just not getting it in case anyone is willing to spell it out for me. The SnapToLevels property defaults to off, which is good because I don't want to constrain zooming to the tiles. I've read in numerous places that you can "override the MinimumResolution" of a TiledMapService to control the Min resolution of the Map (not the layer). Anyone want to confirm whether this is actually possible without writing a whole block of code? Is it done within the code block for the TiledMapService? I assume not since changing the MinimumResolution from 0 to something really small in that block seems to have no effect on the map. Seems like it's supposed to be as easy as a single line setting a new value for MinimumResolution. My coding is basically trial by fire, but nothing I've tried has worked to this point. Thanks, Gavin PS- below is the entire map.xml file. Seems like it should be easy enough, but the format is far different than examples I've seen- assuming due to being created in the application builder: =-=-=-=-=-=-=-= <esri:Map xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" xmlns:sys="clr-namespace:System;assembly=mscorlib" xmlns:esri="http://schemas.esri.com/arcgis/client/2009" xmlns:esriBing="clr-namespace:ESRI.ArcGIS.Client.Bing;assembly=ESRI.ArcGIS.Client.Bing" xmlns:esriMapping="http://schemas.esri.com/arcgis/mapping/2009" xmlns:esriExtensibility="http://schemas.esri.com/arcgis/client/extensibility/2010" xmlns:esriFSSymbols="clr-namespace:ESRI.ArcGIS.Client.FeatureService.Symbols;assembly=ESRI.ArcGIS.Client" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation"> <esriMapping:ScaleBarExtensions.ScaleBarMapUnit>Meters</esriMapping:ScaleBarExtensions.ScaleBarMapUnit> <esri:Map.IsLogoVisible>False</esri:Map.IsLogoVisible> <esri:Map.Extent> <esri:Envelope XMin="-13641187.7156398" XMax="-13638471.3364929" YMin="4569668.5" YMax="4571234.5"> <esri:Envelope.SpatialReference> <esri:SpatialReference WKID="102100" /> </esri:Envelope.SpatialReference> </esri:Envelope> </esri:Map.Extent> <esri:ArcGISTiledMapServiceLayer ID="b5cf0f4129ea4bac9ce08db7ad830804" Url="http://services.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services/World_Street_Map/MapServer" MinimumResolution="0"> <esriExtensibility:Document.IsBaseMap>true</esriExtensibility:Document.IsBaseMap> <esriMapping:LayerExtensions.LayerName>Streets</esriMapping:LayerExtensions.LayerName> <esriMapping:LayerExtensions.LayerInfos /> <esriExtensibility:LayerProperties.IsPopupEnabled>true</esriExtensibility:LayerProperties.IsPopupEnabled> <esriExtensibility:LayerProperties.IsVisibleInMapContents>true</esriExtensibility:LayerProperties.IsVisibleInMapContents> </esri:ArcGISTiledMapServiceLayer> </esri:Map> =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Thanks Jennifer If I interpret your code correctly, it looks like you've inserted a tiled map service in which you did not apply a minimum resolution and then a "FeatureLayer" in which you apply the desired resolution range (presumable to work independently from the max/min of the tiled service?). I am assuming the "FeatureLayer" is a single layer pulled from a dynamic map service? To be more specific about my issue, I created a map using the SL application builder. I added a tiled map service from esri (code below), 2 dynamic map services (local) and a featurelayer from one of our local dynamic services. As we see, there is a minimum resolution set with the tiled service, but it seems to just be a placeholder since changing the value or removing the code has no effect on zooming. The min zoom level of the tiled service seems to control the zoom scale of the map, even though the dynamic services can be zoomed much closer (as we do in the web ADF maps). Your example seems to imply that adding a "FeatureLayer" and setting a min resolution range on that will take over once the tiled service turns off? This doesn't seem to be the case for me. I removed the min resolution code from the tiled service and added a min resolution of 0.00000001 to the feature layer. I still can't zoom in past the extent of a very large parcel (same as before). My goal is to be able to zoom in very tight so users can see things like valve clusters in an intersection. Forgive my ignorance, but what am I missing? Thanks, Gavin <esri:ArcGISTiledMapServiceLayer ID="Topographic" Url="http://services.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services/Canvas/World_Light_Gray_Base/MapServer" MinimumResolution="0"> <esriExtensibility:Document.IsBaseMap>true</esriExtensibility:Document.IsBaseMap> <esriMapping:LayerExtensions.LayerName>Light Gray Canvas</esriMapping:LayerExtensions.LayerName> <esriMapping:LayerExtensions.LayerInfos /> <esriExtensibility:LayerProperties.IsPopupEnabled>true</esriExtensibility:LayerProperties.IsPopupEnabled> <esriExtensibility:LayerProperties.IsVisibleInMapContents>true</esriExtensibility:LayerProperties.IsVisibleInMapContents> </esri:ArcGISTiledMapServiceLayer>

Dominique If you're still linked to this thread, any chance you could point to documentation describing "how" to override the limits? I found another thread http://forums.esri.com/thread.asp?c=158&f=2455&t=283054 simply stating that you use something like <esri:Map MinimumResolution="0.00000001" /> but where the heck does it go? We're just starting to play with SL and it seems that it goes in the map.xml file, but trial & error has gotten me nowhere in trying to improve the zoom level. I sure wish I had a programmer on hand... =:o) Thanks, Gavin
