What ArcGIS software are you using? ArcMap? Background 32/64bit? ArcGIS Pro? Please let me know. Looking at the data I would guess this buffer operation will take a fair amount of resources in order to complete. 32bit processing may not be sufficient. I'm confirming that now and will update this thread once I've got some results. Thanks. Ken

Thanks. For the case you provided the output should be empty. Please see How Intersect works—Help | ArcGIS for Desktop For your output the line feature is completely contained by the polygon feature so there are no point intersections:

Unfortunately there appears to be something wrong with the data you've attached (it appears to be corrupt). Could you please contact ESRI support, 1 (888) 377-4575, with this case so we can open an incident? Thanks. Ken ESRI - Geoprocessing

I see two things as possibly being a problem. 1. value = 'V' The value in the sql syntax will need to be in quotes so change this to: value = "'V'" (to make more clear it's... " ' V ' ") 2. If TEST.CATEGORIES is a feature class with a shape column "select * from..." will not work. Change this to: sql = "select fld1, fld2, fld3 from TEST.CATEGORIES WHERE TIP_SER = " + value Let me know if changing these helps. Thanks. Ken

Correct. ArcSDESQLExecute is written using the 'old' SDE libraries which requires the spatial table to be registered with SDE (Enterprise GDB) and for the shape field to only contain one geometry type. From what I can tell from the info provided, Query Layers are probably the way to go.

Hi Jennifer, I believe the "Field SHAPE required..." check is for an internal property. I'm guessing from your other posts that you are comparing old data with new? If so, I would not be surprised if differences like this may come up. I would guess that this property check can be safely ignored. If you would like me to confirm, please send me the input base and test feature classes as well as all the parameters you passed in to the FeatureCompare tool when you are seeing this. Thanks, Ken

Hi Jennifer, In case the Geodatabase folks don't see your post I'll reply. I believe your guess about the difference between high/low precision is correct. If you would like to confirm this for yourself, please see http://downloads.esri.com/support/whitepapers/ao_/UnderstandingCoordinateManagement_June2007.pdf which has a good explanation of coordinate management in the geodatabase. You mention you have 64bit geoprocessing installed. You mean the 64bit background processing install yes? Are you also running your process in the background? You will have to in order to use the 64bit install and thus take advantage of any additional memory the process may need. If you are running in the background with the 64bit background geoprocessor it may be that this is all the memory that is required. If you are able to share your data and case with us I can take a look. If so, contact me at khartling@esri.com and I'll send you information on how to get the data and case to us securely. Thanks, Ken

Did you check the blog link that I provided earlier in this thread? If everything checks out according to the info in that blog, another option is to use the geometry operators. There is a discussion and code sample here. If it still does not work for you, and if the workaround is not acceptable (the output will be different than the output from the Intersect tool), please submit a technical support incident and provide the data and exact parameters you are using in the Intersect tool so we can investigate. Thanks, Ken Hello, I´m also having the same problem (ERROR 999999: Error executing function. Invalid Topology [Topoengine error.] Failed to execute (Intersect)) while trying to intersect a 5,000,000-point feature with a 2,000,000-polygon feature. Based on the discussion above I guess the only way is to break the datasets into smaller parts? I am a new user of ArcGIS and I am not very familiar with the software. I´m using ArcGIS 10.1 on Windows 7, 64 Bit, 16 Gb RAM. Both files are in a Geodatabase.

Hi Grant, I'm helping Dale out with your issue. Could you email me at khartling@esri.com and I'll send you an email with instructions on how to get your dataset and repro case to us. Thanks, Ken Ok. So, first I tried to do another operation in background on a small set of data. I did an Identity with 10 polygons as input and my 860 polygons as identity features. This worked just fine. Then, I tried to run another buffer on a tiny point file with just 10 points again. This worked just fine also. I ran the buffer on my 1.8 million points again, just as I did before my last reply, and it worked swimmingly this time, executing the buffer in just over 5 minutes. The time difference from when I ran it in the foreground (24 minutes) would indicate it is processing in 64-bit background. I cannot figure out why I got the error last time. As far as I can tell, I did nothing different. Let me know when you get the FTP site to me. Unfortunately, I am working with a dummy data set of sensitive location data kept blind by the government agency that collects and manages this data. I am packaging a model together for the agency to run for me on the real data. Nonetheless, If I can identify what sorts of shortcomings my system has that are contributing to the failure of the tool, I should be able to identify hangups for them based on their system configurations. If you are able to be successful, it will be helpful to know what differences we have that might lead to errors. Grant

Looks like we are phasing out our ftp site in place of an easier to use system. Please email me so I can get your email address and start the process. Thanks, Ken

Hi Caitlin, It may be how complex the data is rather than how many features. Are you using FGDB? First, have you looked at this blog and gone through the suggestions to make sure everything is setup for you to be successful with large overlay operations? If so and it's still a problem could you share the data with me? I'll also need the exact parameters you used in the Intersect tool when you encountered the problem. Here's how to upload your data securely to our ftp site: "You can place data on the /pub/incoming location on our FTP site. However, no data can be downloaded from that location except by internal Esri users using a special user name and password. Login to ftp://ftp.esri.com/ using the anonymous login and providing you e-mail address as the password if prompted (Note: Most browsers and FTP clients will log in using the anonymous account automatically). Once connected, navigate to the pub/incoming folder, create directories as needed and upload you content." Thanks, Ken
