Hi, guys, I have two questions about Workgroup ArcSDE and I don't know they are related or not. Our ArcGIS Server is at Enterprise level, and I have Workgroup ArcSDE through SQL Server Express configured on the same machine. The ArcSDE license/authorization file I used is the same as the Enterprise ArcGIS Server. The Workgroup ArcSDE authorization process went through without any problem. The first question: Can I configure Workgroup ArcSDE under Enterprise license level? The second question is: I can create a geodatabase by using the Database Server node at ArcCatalog. In the built connection, there is a command for "New Geodatabase" when I right-clicked. In the popup window, it lets me type in the Geodatabase Name, specifying the location of the storage, the size of the storage, and so on. After clicking OK button, it takes some seconds before the geodatabase name shows in the connection. But the geodatabase name disappears when I hit the refresh button, and the storage file is not created at the location I specified. I don't know why. Is it a bug from ESRI, or different licence level between Workgroup ArcSDE and Enterprise ArcGIS Server? Thanks, Mike

Justin, Thanks for your suggestion. There is an error message (which I forgot what it is) at the end of removal of the machine from the site. But the machine was successfully (or not?) deleted from the site because when I started up ArcGIS Server manager, the login window did not startup. Instead, it asked me to Create a new site or Join an existing site. For the second step, I can't create new site with the existing config-store, directories, and log folder setting. It always told me that the site is used. I can't make the original server machine back to the site, too. Since it is messed up, my final solution is to uninstall ArcGIS Server and reinstall ArcGIS Server. After that, I can join the second machine into the existing site. Then, I have to reconfigure/start all the services. Thanks again. Mike Thank you for the reply. This means that the NTFS Permissions are correct, and you have network connectivity. The next test I would suggest you do is tor remove the current machine from the site, and then connect this machine to the site. Please note that this will require downtime. This test will see if it is an issue adding the machine, or if it adding a second machine that is the issue. Here are the steps: 1. Log into server manager on the currently working machine a. navigate to site/machines b. Click the "X" that is associated with the machine name -- Note: What this will do is remove the machine from the site. This means it will remove the machine from the config store and the directories. All of your configuration will still be there, and we will be able to reconnect it after the test is complete. 2. After the machine is removed, navigate to the second machine a. Instead of join an existing site, select create new site b. When prompted, point to the existing config store and directories --Note: This will not overwrite any existing configurations. You should simply be able to connect to the config store and directories. If this works, then try to connect your other server to this by joining the site. If that doesn't work, then we have discovered there is an issue connecting the second machine If this doesn't work, then there is an issue connecting this machine to the config store/directories. To clean up simply go to the original machine and select create new site, point to the config store and directories to put things back as they were. Please let me know the results- Justin

Hi, friends, I am joining my new ArcGIS Server 10.1 machine to an existing site. And I got errors at the last step of joining (see the attached image. I deleted some sensitive information for security purpose). (1) The exiting site and the new Arc Server machine are in the same version 10.1 (patch 1). (2) Both of them are installed/configured as a domain user: domainname\arcgis. (3) The folder of arcgisserver is shared by using UNC path as \\machinename\arcgisserver. Since the domain user of arcgis is the owner of the folder of arcgisserver, I can't set the read/write permission separatorly (see the screenshot below). (4) Since the new server is installed/configured by using the same domain user, arcgis, the shared arcgisserver folder should be readable/writeable to the new server. Am I right? Additionally, I can't set the read/write permission separatorly (see the screenshot above). (5) Operation system for both servers: Windows Server 2008 R2. (6) I could join the same same to the existing site successfully. The problem happens after I patched both machines. That's all I can think of now. If you need additional information for detailed diagnose, let me know. Thanks, Mike

Robert and Ivan, Thanks for the replies. I have found that the isEditable property of my FeatureLayer variable is false. Is this the reason of my problem? Since this property is readonly, what should I do if I need to make it true? Thanks, Xiannian Xiannian, Just like Ivan mentioned non nullable attributes. No you do not need to populate the OID or GlobalID fields. Not sure what problem you are having as I do editing this way all the time.

Robert, Thanks for the reply. What do you mean all required attributes? The attributes I attached to the Graphic variable is the direct copy of the field list of my feature class which is stored in a Workgroup SDE database. OK, except the ObjectID and GlobalID fields. Do I need to populate some numerical value for this field? Also, the FeatureServer service that I am using works fine in ArcGIS.com. Without editing any attributes in ArcGIS.com platform, I can add new features into the same layer which I am using in the ArcGIS Flex API environment. Thanks again, Xiannian Xiannian, Make sure you are passing graphics with all required attributes (as Ivan Mentioned) as an array. If it is a single graphic use code like this (all the items in red are required): FeatureLayer.applyEdits([ptGraphic],null,null,true,null);

Thank for the reply. Basically, that is what my understanding. I have done like this. That confirms that I am on the right direction. But, so far, no any success yet. I successfuly creates the graphic array based on the xml file. Then, I have the program called the addFeatureArrayToFeatureLayer function. I created two event listners. But the EDITS_COMPLETE listner never return me anything while EDITS_STARTING listener does give me feedbacks. And I don't know what's going after I called the method of ApplyEdits() function. ArcGIS Server Manager log section has no further information. I have tested my fecture service on ArcGIS.com. I can add features to the layer on ArcGIS.com. That means my feature service has no problem. Right? Thanks, main body { var fs:Array = new Array(); for each ( pt in pts) { var graphic:Graphic = new Graphic(WebMercatorUtil.geographicToWebMercator(tweet.twtPoint)); graphic.attributes = { "User": pt.AuthorName, "ID": pt.Tid, "XY": pt.LocationXY, "Datetime": pt.PublishDate }; fs.push(graphic); } addFeatureArrayToFeatureLayer(fs); } protected function addFeatureArrayToFeatureLayer(fs:Array):void { var fLayer:FeatureLayer = new FeatureLayer("http://url/arcgis/rest/services/myMap/myService/FeatureServer/0"); fLayer.addEventListener(FeatureLayerEvent.EDITS_COMPLETE,addFeatureDone); fLayer.addEventListener(FeatureLayerEvent.EDITS_STARTING,addFeatureStarting); fLayer.applyEdits(fs,null,null); } private function addFeatureStarting(e:FeatureLayerEvent):void { Alert.show("Starting"); } private function addFeatureDone(e:FeatureLayerEvent):void { Alert.show("Succeed"); } Parse xml (the ArcGIS Flex Viewer is a big sample of how to do it) Create MapPoints from readed data Create array of Graphics with created geometries and required(not nullable) attributes applyEdits()

Hi, friends, I have many points in xml format. I can read this xml file in Flex. My goal is to add these points to a feature layer which is served in Feature Server with Feature Access enabled. The scenario is: first, read x, y coordinate from external file; second, convert the x, y coordinate to a MapPoint; thirdly, add this MapPoint to a layer in a Feature Service served through ArcGIS Server with Feature Access enabled. All the samples use Editor tool and/or Drawing tool. How can I add to these x,y coordinates to a Feature Layer without using Editor and/or Drawing tool? Thanks,

Hi, Jake, Thanks for the reply. It does work after I patched ArcGIS Desktop. Also, the patch makes the whole process faster, much faster. Thanks, Xiannian Try installing Service Pack 1 and see if you receive the same error. If you do, try recreating the mosaic dataset in a new File Geodatabase, and then try creating your overviews.

Jake, thanks for the reply. 1. ArcGIS 10.1. No Service Pack. 2. I am using File-based Geodatabase. 3. I have tried your suggestion. The same error happens again. It even pops up a crash window. The overview items include 1060. But ArcGIS crashes when generating 214th item. All of the 214 items have the same error message id-ed as 800042021. The attached image indicates that. Thanks, Mike 1. What version of ArcMap, including service packs, are you running? Ex: ArcGIS 10.1 Service Pack 1 2. What type of geodatabase does your mosaic dataset reside in (i.e. File, Personal, SDE)? 3. Try rebuilding the overviews with only the options 'Define Missing Overview Tiles' and 'Generate Overviews'. Make sure the options 'Generate Missing Overview Tiles' and 'Regenerate Stale Overview Tiles are unchecked.

Hi, friends, I am loading millions of aerial-photos into mosaic dataset. These aerial-photos are not seamless tiles, and the overlaps happen everywhere. Because the data is too huge, we create one mosaic dataset for very 5000 files. Most of the mosaic dataset can have the overviews created successfully. But for some of the mosaic dataset, Build Overview failed, and many error messages id-ed as 80042021 appear in the log file. The message body says: Could not generate overview item.[Ov_i02_L01_R0000F5E9_C00006168.tif]. This error messages many times and the only difference is the overview file names. I also meet some other error message when building overview for mosaic dataset. To make thread simply and clear, I am going to start a new thread for another problem/error I met during building overview. Please check it out and help. I have attached a screenshot of the building-overview logs. Thanks. Mike

From operation system perspective, your deleted files should be still in the Recycle Bin. The regular DELETE will not permanently delete files but move the files to the Recycle Bin.

Hi, friends, I am currently working on the Clip and Ship geoprocessing service in ArcGIS Server 10.1 by following the example. The geoprocessing service is published successfully. I can use the published geoprocessing service in ArcGIS Desktop. The problem happens when I use a web application to call the published geoprocessing service. The error message thrown out is: "Unable to complete operation". The faultcode is 400. I have checked the geoprocessing output. The process is basically done. The output file is stored in the defined SCRATCHWORKSPACE. The job folder has the file-based geodatabase. The used Flex API is 2.4. What will be causes of the problems? Do I need to use Flex API 3? Is there any relationships between SCRATCHWORKSPACE and the arcgisoutput folder? If Yes, how to configure it? Thanks, Mike
