@DougGreen Did you ever find an answer for this question. I am curious not only about your question, but also generally on whether the accuracy is better when data is collected in a local/regional projected coordinate system (SP or UTM) as opposed to sticking with Web Mercator? Or even lat/long for that matter. So two questions - 1) any interesting discoveries on your original question and 2) do you have any insight into why collecting in say EPSG 6318 is preferable to Web Mercator or even lat/long. Thanks! Zach

Thanks @JimBarry this worked for me. I included a general example of what I did in case anybody is interested. The documentation for the assign_to_items() method shows the function call with a JSON array of item objects - 3 in that example. My array is an array of 1, but obviously more efficient to update or assign categories to multiple items at once. I will pursue this from a Pandas Dataframe. I will update or post again once I get to that point. BOTTOM LINE: assigning categories to groups is very doable. FYI - a nice article on the Category Gallery Instant App posted by ESRI's own @BernSzukalski that inspired me to create Group Categories for organizational purposes specifically for the Category Gallery. from arcgis.gis import GIS
from arcgis.gis import Group
my_gis = GIS(username = u_name, password = p_word)
# group_id is a string of numbers of text FYI (for those unaware)
group_id = <find itemid for group, i.e. dc74b222222269e9a54f81afaed0066>
# get group
target_group = Group(my_gis, group_id)
# search items (adjust this to find your items)
items = target_group.content.search(query = "owner: <my_agol_username> AND group:{}".format(group_id),item_type="Feature Service", max_items = 125)
# index of 0 is an an example. Find index for target_item
item = items[0]
# you need item_id # as with group_id above
item_id = item.item_id
# category = transportation in this example
json_temp = [{item_id: {"categories": ["/Categories/transportation"]}}]
target_group.categories.assign_to_items(json_temp) @JimBarry. This worked for me.

Hi again Josh. That last paragraph seems exactly what I was after. Unfortunately my frame of reference is incomplete - I can't recall an instance where I "have a page of content pulling from a tag...". Not that sophisticated. My experience involves more static online data sharing, with additional Webmaps for Collector or presentations and reference. So do you mean tags are more precise? It seems they have more utility for searching and queries online. They almost seem more permanent, whereas categories can be used to filter or group for projects and Groups. Is that accurate to some degree? It would just be nice to stick with either tags OR categories as the organizational category used to organize my data in my offline geodatabase and inventory spreadsheets. Then define categories as necessary for AGOL purposes. Does that make sense? Thanks - Zach

Bern - great information! I actually did read your category gallery article this morning (published yesterday right?) I created one using Instant Apps (obviously) and it's really nice. Upon further review, it almost like a sidebar filter gallery app right? I don't necessarily have to configure filtering options to Category, I can do Tags, Type, etc. I haven't explored the organization vs group-based categories yet, but seems pretty self-explanatory and useful. Just out of curiosity (for @jcarlson too) in general items end up with more tags than categories? I would assume that's the case. I'll read that Covid gallery you linked. FYI, I did find a great example from Oregon Metro ( OR Metro Category Gallery ) linked in the main esriuk Configurable Apps docs ( https://www.esriuk.com/en-gb/arcgis/products/configurable-apps ). Then I found your article.

Lot of Venn Diagram examples in the land of ESRI. Like what is the difference between Living Atlas and Portal. And what do I use for a "Label" and "Post Tags" for this post? Those are rhetorical questions. Unlike the burning philosophical question I pose here: When do I use Tags vs. Categories and what is the difference between them? It seems that Tags are concise and searchable. Categories are an abstraction that can encompass multiple tags. Also tags can fall under multiple Categories. And yet I'm confused why use Categories when we can simply categorize one item with multiple tags. I would GREATLY appreciate examples and use cases from ArcGIS Online content organization. How do you use tags and/or categories? When do they overlap. And your opinions. In my case, I am organizing Group content: shapefiles, feature layers, webmaps, apps, etc. Oh - and I asked this already: Tags or Categories thanks @RobertBorchert Zach

Exactly. I can ALT->TAB through maps, layouts, etc. I can R-Click or 2X-click to get properties on TOC Items. But I cannot toggle through the Export, Catalog, etc. panes. No opening symbology properties or really doing anything. Cannot close tabs like maps, layouts, attribute tables. I just have to turn on / turn off. This occurred on Windows 10 and now 11. Also on 2.8 and 2.9. Found any solutions @BryanNeely1 ? I should also mention that I have a second project open in another...instance of ArcPro I guess. That concurrently is functioning fine.

This is really bad. Has anybody found a solution? None of the stock basemaps (map --> basemaps) export to PDF to a professional presentation quality. Even taking vector layers from Living Atlas or Portal render well when exporting to PDF. USGS National Map for instance. I thought I'd solved this setting the map to Web Mercator WGS 84, but nope. Any workarounds or solutions? Thanks.

Good news! Unless everyone has already figures it out. If new arrivers have arrived I assume it's because you installed 2.9.0 and tried to open a DWG? It is true that some DWGs work and some don't in 2.9.0 (wierdly?). Just for reference, the DWGs will not open, but more specifically when trying to drop down the <filename>.dwg in the Catalog to display Polyline, Polygon, Anno...etc. you get the spinning deal and/or an Error. Here is what a functioning DWG dropdown should look like: As with @wilcow some DWGs opened, others displayed the buggy behavior. Then I simply updated from 2.9.0 to 2.9.2 and the problem was fixed. SO! 2.9.0 = bad / 2.9.2 = good. So far at least...

Thanks @DanPatterson but alas...not the issue. I do like "working too fast". Have a possibly offensive analogy que'd up, but I'll skip it. Ran into this again today. SPECIFICS: Oh wait! In the 5 minutes it took to log onto the forum and start typing, it went away. I cannot remember the exact dialogue box that kept popping up every time I right or left clicked anywhere, but the gist is - the same dialogue box kept popping up no matter what I tried to do. For instance, let's say the Properties box for a specific layer (not sure if "box" is the correct term) opened no matter if I clicked on Projects dropdown, or Symbology pane, or right clicked a layer in TOC. Silver lining is, maybe wait a few minutes instead of restarting and Pro will catch up.

Prescient timing John. I haven't run into this problem enough to warrant more research, but a geometry editing task involving copying rows to new features, editing vertices, merges and unions has reproduced this problem multiple times today. I just tried your solution, except I 'Recalculate[d]' the index, and it worked! Thanks for that. Clearly a bug, but at least I don't have to remove and reload the layer every time now.

Having the exact same issue, out of the blue. Best described in my case by @HeatherFox1. Really weird. I've had to "turn on and off" 3 times today. In my case, it's the Explore tool. Not actually using it btw, just seems when these symptoms occur all I can do is click the map and the Explore tool window opens. I can hover over whatever and see popups. My solution is to open task manager and end program. Any solutions? Be nice to make it through a 3 day stretch without encountering software issues. Thanks. Zach.

Hi Robert. Well I'll start there. I do recall encountering a response from you with that technique. Just to be clear, do I copy each of the entire ESRI folders contained in Local and Roaming for C:\Users\<user profile>\AppData and then rename, or just rename the folder directly? I could not tell if this was a data backup thing as well. Thanks!

Thanks Robert. I put in some more research this weekend before taking any drastic measures and stumbled across a LONG post here (ESRI Community forum post addressing Pro's sluggishness) where KoryKramer of ESRI pointed to this document - Troubleshooting Pro Performance Issues ESRI doc. I'll do a little more research on differences between Performance Assessment Tool (PAT) and Diagnostic Monitor (MON) because those might be helpful. But, I also came across a forum response of yours addressing Caching - clearing cache's specifically -clearing the cache. I'm unsure at this point why my Pro is slow, because originally it seemed to be a network issue, but now it is hampering projects on external hard drives significantly. I started a brand new project on my external hard drive, using only data contained in that drive. Went to clear the cache and it's 16GB!! Does clearing the cache inside a project ONLY affect that project? I can't seem to find information on whether clearing cache as shown in below screenshot clears my entire cache in C:\Users\<me>\AppData\Local\ESRI\Local Caches or JUST for the project. I did check the Local Caches folder size and it is also 16GB, so...it must clear my entire Cache, not just for one project. Going on tangents, but hopefully some useful background info. I really appreciate your help - Zach

I've been suffering from a persistent issue related to ArcGIS Pro communicating with my cloud-based server. My cloud-based file storage is called Box, - seems equivalent in function to One Drive. My issue is mentioned in my recent post (thanks @Robert_LeClair) - https://community.esri.com/t5/arcgis-pro-questions/arcgis-pro-and-box-network-lag/m-p/1142435#M51212 . I spoke with Tech Support a couple weeks ago and he initially diagnosed it as being a network issue (Box) since it was initially resolved by working on a hard drive. While it directly is a network issue, as Resource Manager shows Box.exe sending and recevieving unsustainable amounts of data over the network, for some reason this revs up when I open Pro in general. However, it's occurring when I am working on projects COMPLETELY contained on my external hard drive - data included. My suspicion is that some process has been kicked off in ArcGIS Pro which persists between sessions wherein Pro keeps asking Box to complete a network-intensive task i.e. open a large DEM, raster, etc. I plan to Uninstall/Reinstall Pro. UNLESS - anybody can recommend diagnostics to identify the process? More specifically, how do I view ArcGIS Pro processes? Pro must be trying to finish some action from multiple weeks ago every time I open it up. ArcPro 2.9 / Windows 10. Thanks, Zach / GIS Specialist

That's a great resource Robert, thanks for linking that. I may have been too loose with my verbage. We are not hosting an sql database or anything official on a cloud server. GIS files and folders represent <1% of the files in my company, so we store everything on Box, including folders containing shapefiles, gdb's, mxd's, Pro projects, etc. I don't know if the link you referenced applies to my situation. It's basically a cloud-based server where our data resides in a flat file system essentially. If my ArcPro project (and data) are copied to my hard drive, problem solved. The data transfer and communication occurring between Box and Pro or Desktop are not any different than when I open a pdf in Adobe or a .doc in Word. But they don't struggle the same way. ALSO note - I updated my original post. Apparently Box is an independent company NOT owned by Microsoft.
