Through my frustration of not finding the post-installation wizard with ArcSDE 10.1 and being unsuccessful with the command line tool to start an SDE service on our SDE databases, I found I was able to access the databases and copy/past/add features/delete features/etc. all through direct connections to our SQL Server 2012 machine. This was WITHOUT ArcSDE running. So... The question is, why do I need to go through the trouble of trying to get the SDE services to run if I can manage our databases through the Desktop tools? I was even able to create an enterprise geodatabase and verified that all of the necessary business tables were created. Perhaps I'm missing something...

I have a model that I've published to a geoprocessing service. When running the gp service, it fails. The log claims an unlicensed tool. The only tool that I figure that could be causing this is the new tabulate intersection tool, which is an ArcGIS for Desktop Advanced tool. However, it is in the analysis toolbox. It shouldn't require an ArcGIS for Server extension. If we are using ArcGIS for Server Standard, is this not enough? Would we need Server Advanced to run ArcGIS for Desktop Advanced tools? I'm assuming that's the case, but wanted to confirm.

I'm also interested in this question... We have an ArcGIS Server installation behind a firewall. The plan was to use a reverse proxy to direct traffic on port 80 to the ArcGIS Server on port 6080 (or 6443 if SSL secure). If this is configured, is the web adaptor even necessary?

Turned out to be that I needed to add the "arcgis" local account to my file folders. I'm now able to publish raster catalogs found on my file server.

I am trying to create a map service that contains several file based, File Geodatabase Unmanaged Raster Catalogs... I have given my ArcGIS Server Administrator/ArcGISSOC/ArcGISSOM permissions to the directory where the file geodatabase resides. When I publish the map service, it publishes, and starts the service, but I get an error: From my ArcGIS Server Manager Log: The Layer:'X in Map:'X' is invalid. The base table definition string "X" is invalid. Where X is may data layer, map TOC, and the name of the raster catalog. The layers do not show up in the service when published. Does anybody have any idea as to what would be causing this? In the help: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/#/Supported_functionality_in_map_services/01540000044r000000/ It lists file based/geodatabase raster catalogs as supported. Only thing I can figure is that I'm missing some permissions somewhere. Any help is greatly appreciated, as this will be a necessity for us.

Has anybody made any progress using the geoprocessing export to PDF tool? Jay, do you have anything to share yet? 😉 My shop is desperately looking for a decently formatted PDF document that will contain the map document, a legend, and a user defined space for a title/notes. I think the geoprocessing route utilizing python is our best bet, but want to be sure before spending a few months in development... Or to contract a service that will do this using SRS. Thanks!

You've probably already found the solution... But you need to add the "Anonymous" or "Anonymous Logon" user within SQL Server Management Studio. After you have done this, TEMPORARILY grant the anonymous user DBCREATOR permissions. This should allow you to connect.

Charlie, Could you provide a snippet of code for your div? I've been meaning to try something like this. Did you also have to put your XAP file somewhere specific of your .NET application?

I'm looking to do some how-to videos on our Trimble Juno SB for common tasks related to acquiring data. Ideally, I'd like a Windows Mobile Emulator for my desktop computer from which I can apply a Trimble Juno SB skin so that it mimics the work environment for our clients/users. I did some google searching and to my surprise, I didn't find anything obvious. I know that I've seen some emulators used in ESRI demos before, so I'm curious what you're using and if it's possible to apply a custom skin that will mimic our client's devices. Thanks!

Many of our agencies web pages are done in ASP.NET. With the new map API's, we'd like a nice way of integrating our Silverlight maps into these pages. Is there a way that I can take the XAP and reference it into something like an iFrame for use in our ASP.NET applications? I see there were some Silverlight controls like those found in ASP.NET futures that I could reference in my ASP.NET page but I can't get any of them to work, probably because they are for older versions of Silverlight.

I have an XY event table that I need to reproject in modelbuilder. However, Project is not accepting the XY Events as a valid input. Is this new in 10? I liked being able to use the Project Management tool after creating my XY Events because the output was a new feature. If I have to export my events to a feature, then project it, it's going to create yet another feature... Seems like an unnecessary step, so maybe I'm missing something. Thanks in advance!

Nevermind, I figured it out... For those that care: In the GPXHelper.cs file of the Vishcious.ArcGIS.SLContrib GPXTypes folder.. I changed:
public static MapPoint LoadWayPointGeometry( wptType wpt )
{
wpt.RequireArgument<wptType>( "wpt" ).NotNull<wptType>();
return new MapPoint( ( double ) wpt.lon, ( double ) wpt.lat );
}
To:
public static MapPoint LoadWayPointGeometry( wptType wpt )
{
wpt.RequireArgument<wptType>( "wpt" ).NotNull<wptType>();
MapPoint g = new MapPoint((double)wpt.lon, (double)wpt.lat);
MapPoint mpGeom = ESRI.ArcGIS.Client.Bing.Transform.GeographicToWebMercator(g);
return mpGeom;
}

How are you folks handling the reprojection from WGS84 to Web Mercator? Assuming most gpx tracks and waypoints are not in Web Mercator. I'm assuming you could use the GeographicToWebMercator Method, but where specifically?
