I appreciate your reply but it's not to the error. Yes, I am signed into AGOL in ArcMap - otherwise it wouldn't start publishing to AGOL. It crashes on the server side publishing. I tried renaming to a new service name. Recreated the MXD from scratch. The thing is this was working - it just suddenly decided to fail on Saturday morning. It's a very simple service with 2 feature classes representing fires - points and polygons.

I was publishing a feature service merrily (doing the overwrite) until yesterday morning when it just failed. Somehow it's just gone in AGOL. Subsequent efforts to republish or even publish with a new name have also failed. It seems to be on the ESRI side. The message is: "Packaging succeeded, but publishing failed. Failed to execute (UploadServiceDefinition). Please consult the GP Results Window for enhanced error description or contact your administrator for the server logs." The only error it gives in the GP log is ERROR 999999: Error executing function. Failed to execute (UploadServiceDefinition). Not very helpful. I am using ArcMap 10.3.1 and the National Park Service Organizational account that was working yesterday morning.

Well, kinda weird, but I was able to get it to work this way. I guess the trick is putting the word "sharing" after our portal name. However I was disappointed in that the lowest interval you could set was 30 seconds. I was hoping to use this to track while helicopter mapping. I need 3 seconds, not 30. Perhaps there's a method to map in a polygon that's automatic as opposed to tracking the device? That way I could see what was being drawn in real time.

I am trying to get this same thing to work in 10.3 with the NPS Portal - but the AGOL Assistant doesn't seem to like our portal. The Location Tracking document is useless since it talks about updating Type Keywords and I assume it meant tags. But apparently if I cannot get into this AGO Assistant then I cannot add Type Keywords and therefore cannot track? This seems kind of arcane. I guess I could use AGOL instead of Portal but that's not what the document said I needed to do. So...???

I also just tried publishing a hosted feature service directly from the template without renaming anything and still no configuration options for Track Location on the map. I tried to use all the specific tags mentioned in the Location Tracking template document. This document is worded a bit oddly in that the steps aren't exactly what you need to do. It should probably specify - "login to Portal to publish your hosted feature service" before step 4 if that's what's needed. It mentions connecting to your portal after that.

I guess the instructions on the Location Tracking Template are different - it doesn't mention hosted feature service and specifically says in step 4 "Publish a feature service to your ArcGIS Server". So I followed this first. It's unfortunate that this old documentation overlaps the other documentation and that the two are conflicting. I will try directly publishing a hosted feature service to portal.

I published as a hosted feature service in Portal and I still don't see any configuration options in the map. I must be missing something here. I followed the instructions to the letter - but they are missing a few letters let's just say.

Not really - it just seems easier for me to publish to our existing SDE than via Portal. Actually it's probably harder but I'm used to this and then I can manage the data locally. However I may have made a false assumption that I can get at the data via sync and offline use. Seems like that's not how this works. I did change the name of the feature class but it didn't make any difference. There is nothing in the map this was added to that indicates a setting for tracking.

It's more or less the same - the creator and editor strings are 200 (that came from the template). The feature class is named LocationTracking (no underscore) - does is have to have the same name?

Sorry - I guess I wasn't clear - I published the service to ArcGIS Server. I use the service in Portal. I didn't create the service in Portal. The instructions just say publish a feature service to your ArcGIS Server. I'm using 10.3.1 ArcMap and a 10.3.1 geodb but our server is 10.3 and the Portal is 10.3.1.

I tried just publishing a regular feature service but it's not being recognized as a tracking service in the map. If it must be a hosted feature service rather than just a feature service published directly to ArcGIS Server (it's not clear in the documentation) then it would be nice to know. I'm using this reference which is the latest I can find. http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=051146f34aec4ef8ac228b5e6b2b8eac

Does anyone have a good public facing web map application that easily allows for raster value displays? AGOL does not yet do this. It would be great if there was a web map application that read image data values.

I am having a similar issue. I make the data entry in today's date and it shows up on AGOL as yesterday. This is kinda weird - not even really a UTC issue since I did the date entry around noon and even as UTC is would still be today.
