Welcome back to Telecom GIS in Five Minutes. It's that time of year again! As we are marching towards the last month of 2021. Gifts and things are being wrapped, and last week, we just pushed our ArcGIS 2021 Q4 release. Our quarterly release contains new versions of ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and several other ArcGIS products and applications.

So while it is hot and fresh, let's take a look at "what you need to know about from the ArcGIS 2021 Q4 Release for telecom". Let's get it.

We will start with the ArcGIS Solutions product gallery. It is truly more than a face-lift, now it allows you to browse the entire collection and understand better each ArcGIS Solutions even before logging in to your ArcGIS organization. In this gallery, you can easily filter on a given industry or search for a specific solution.

For example, in this new Walkout Survey Solution, once we click on the solution, this overlay window will first indicate which ArcGIS environment, this solution can be deployed to. And this new Walkout Survey Solution can be used to streamline the management of communication walkout surveys and quickly evaluate the feasibility of proposed broadband expansion projects, which we will be going into detail in a later episode. Here we have also moved two other communication solutions to here, so the ArcGIS Solution App will be the consolidated entry point you need to know about Esri's solutions for telecommunications.

Some of you might have noticed, during this release, we have made some small adjustments to the names for our Communications Data Management Solutions, which were formerly called the Communications Data Management for ArcGIS Enterprise, is now renamed to be Communications Utility Network Foundation, for our robust utility network-based solution for managing NextGen communication networks. And the simplified hosted solution, the Communications Data Management for ArcGIS Online is now called Communication Data Management, a sleek new name that shows how simple and quick you can leverage the solution to perform high-level design and field data collection.

Now let's put our focus on what's new for Utility Network in ArcGIS Pro 2.9 and Enterprise 10.9.1. Our development team has been putting some great effort into this release. Significant work has been completed across the product to improve performance and provide new capabilities. Here are a few highlights for that.

With 2.9, the utility network can be migrated between geodatabases for staging and testing using the Copy and Paste tools in the Catalog pane or Copy geoprocessing tool. This option will benefit users who want to stage and configure their utility network in a file geodatabase before moving into production with an enterprise geodatabase. And we have added support for the transfer of utility networks using an XML workspace document via the geoprocessing tools. It provides another method to migrate your utility network.

And then it is the Error Inspector. In the past, when we need to check for more details on an error in a utility network, we have to use the identify tool to click on them to closely investigate the issue. Now this provides a new method to review and work with errors in your network. View error details, filter based upon map extent, and more. Future releases will contain enhancements to the functionality offered here to improve the user experience when working to resolve error scenarios.

A few of our utility network geoprocessing tools have also been updated to run asynchronously in an enterprise geodatabase, which increases performance tremendously.

The ArcGIS Pro 2.9 and ArcGIS Enterprise 10.9.1 versions have been announced as the first designated network management release in the Network Management Release Plan 2021. And our goal is to provide a stable platform on a long-term support release that will allow users to land on the versions that are best suited for utility network solutions and provide a predictable schedule for upgrade planning.

There are many other new functionalities and capabilities that would facilitate or make your work in telecom much more efficient and joyful. And I want to highlight one more thing for today. Let's talk about our database options.

As we speak right now, you can connect to databases from ArcGIS Pro or ArcGIS Enterprise to those databases on your own infrastructure or the cloud environment. There's already a lot of options here, and now with Enterprise 10.9.1 and ArcGIS Pro 2.9, we are introducing the new capability to connect cloud data warehouses, which is a trending option for telecom carriers to manage big data with databases accessible in public clouds as managed services.

This architecture not only provides convenient data access but also brings scalability and speed at the same time. We will be supporting Amazon Redshift, Google BigQuery, and Snowflake in this release. And users can leverage ArcGIS Pro 2.9’s ability to connect, explore and create query layers and publish corresponding map services to ArcGIS Enterprise for sharing.

So here are the quick highlights on a few things I don’t want you to miss from this release. If you have any questions about what you saw or read from the Esri blogs that you think would be helpful to what you do, please don’t hesitate to reach out to share your thoughts.
