Has anyone looked at the tax parcel editing basemap available for download at arcgis.com?
I'm wondering, when you open the .mxd and begin to explore the editing environment it seams
as though there are individual layer files storing the feature templates for each feature class
inside the fabric.  Does anyone know how these are made?  Are they .lyr files somehow stored
inside of the .mxd?  I'm trying to figure out how they did this...Thanks in advance!

Nick,

These are just Layers built off the Parcel Fabric sub-layers, at 10.0 these were made editable by the parcel editor if they share the same source.

To create these, just right click a Parcel Fabric sub-class and choose to 'Save as Layer File'.  Make sure that the feature template is setting the value in the definition query if you use one on the layer.  If you need a reference, use the Organize Feature Template tool on the Tax Parcel Editing Map document to see how it's set up.

Thanks

I have tried to use the Tax Parcel Editing Base Map to see what it looks like, how it works, etc... But I am unable to open this map.  The map starts to open but then I get the same error message saying that "ArcGIS Desktop has encountered a serious application error and is unable to continue."  I tried to open with ArcCatalog, and on the the desktop, but I get the same error.  I also downloaded the map again thinking there was some thing wrong with the download but that did not help.

Hey Steve,

When I first downloaded the map I was getting the same errors as you are getting.  Eventually it started working and it went away (I really didn't do anything).  When you open it, make sure you don't have anything else (as much as posssible) open as the mxd has quite a bit of information in it and it may just be an internal memory thing.  Hope it works out for you...

ericjonathansmith - Are you attempting to open the map document with an ArcEditor or ArcInfo licensed version of ArcMap? The Tax Parcel Editing Map contains the parcel fabric data type which is only supported at Editor and Info license levels.  You will get an error when attempting to open the MPK and even map document without the appropriate license level.
