Hello, I work with a habitats polygon layer that includes about 100 habitat types. Most of the maps I produce with it will only have 5-10 of these habitats in the mapping area. However when I make the legend all 100 are included. At present I am manually making the legend for each map, which of course is time consuming. Is there a way to include only the habitats that are included in the map in the key, and not all those within the shapefile/feature class? Thanks!

Have a look at Working with legends—Help | ArcGIS Desktop . You will find the following option "Only show classes that are visible in the current map extent"

If the Only show classes that are visible in the current map extent check box is checked, a legend item class will only appear in the legend if a feature from that class is in the current extent.
