Campbell County (KY) Ohio River Flooding response 2018

People often ask what our office does. Here's a great example of our digital mapping and GIS resources in use during February's Ohio River flooding. In addition to traditional paper maps, we provide online maps, topography and contour data, floodplain data, and customized map services for E-911 / First Responders.

Our office captured Ohio River flooding footage using our Yuneec UAV (drone). In a pinch, the extent of the flooding can be recorded on a paper map (with contour lines) to better understand the extent of flooding that happens at various river levels, in this case 60.5 ft. The photos and videos were taken with our drone, which is licensed, insured, and operated by an FAA Part 107 licensed pilot. Check out the FAA's "KnowBeforeYouFly" website for drone rules and regulations. You can get into serious trouble with the FAA using drones inappropriately, or in prohibited airspace.
