Why won't my repaired data links stay repaired?

I have data attached to a .lyr file. When I pull the layer into the map the map they appear as broken links. I can fix this no problem, using properties, set data source and navigating to the file, after which the layers work fine. However if I then remove the layer and re-add it the link is once again broken. Should this be happening and would it work to repair the data links of each feature and then regroup these into the .lyr's?

Thanks

Hi Ellen,

Open the properties of the saved LYR file from ArcCatalog. Set the data source with the correct data path. This should solve your issue.

Check your project properties and make sure you have check on the save relative path option at the bottom of the map document properties dialog as shown in this link
