There is such a variety of books, Lynda courses, online resources, etc., and it becomes very confusing. I think that recommendations from this user group would cut through the clutter!

there is nothing that will accommodate all learning styles... therefore, no recommendation

I think taking a traditional course at ESRI or at a community college where they offer ArcGIS classes. I find this way the best way to learn and you can learn from instructor than the online course. If you are familiar with the computer side such as simple basic stuff like creating a new folder, copy and paste etc..

ESRI has their online course that you can take but you have to have the software installed on your machine and if you have a trouble how to fix or need some help it is on your own and you have to figure it out yourself and things like that...

That is just my opinion.

Hi Timothy,

"ArcGIS" is not a single software product, but a platform with many different components/pieces - so it's a pretty broad request that you're asking for. First, you should try to understand the overall system; Jack discusses this in the UC 2016 Plenary:

Once you understand the platform, you can then decided which components/pieces you want to focus on. Some great resources include:

Hope this helps,

I recommend Understanding GIS: An ArcGIS Project Workbook (2nd edition). I was one of the writers, so this comment may seem biased (check Amazon reviews). The book is somewhat dated--last tested on ArcGIS 10.2 for Desktop, so it's a couple of releases behind. But it should still hold up well. Getting to Know ArcGIS Desktop (4th edition) and GIS Tutorial 1 (6th edition) are very popular and well-regarded intro workbooks. You'll learn a lot from any one of these three.
