I work for a Native American Tribe. We are constantly purchasing and changing status of properties from fee to trust. I need a simple way to add and update the database. I had the list kept in an Excel Spreadsheet. I learned GIS many years ago and have not been able to get training over the years to keep up with the advancements. I find instructions to create a geodatabase but not how to add data to it or change data.

Can anyone help me with simple step by step instructions so I can link to the parcel layer and quickly and easily update the map?

I have tried ESRI courses but they stop short of answering my questions.

Hi,

I suppose that you have geographic information in excel? (coordinates of the properties).

You can make a geodatabase, then convert the excel table to geodatabase table (Conversion tools/excel/excel to table) and the convert it to locations (right click). I had done it only with points, but it will probably work with other types two.

If you already have a geographic information file (shapefile, feature class, kml, ect) convert it to feature class and join the table.

for the update, if the properties are polygons, you can use update (analysis-> overlay), if the properties are points you can add the new features or just do the process from the scratch. You can build a model to do the process its time you need to update.

If you want to spend a bit more time, you can create a script to update the feature class at a specified period of time. If you search the forum there are examples, but if you are not want to mess with scripting, just ignore the lust two lines.

Greatings,

John

You are so very helpful. Thank you

I have excel file with parcel numbers and not coordinates but may be able to add that. Some are vacant so do not all have addresses.

Thanks.

I don't have coordinates in excel. Only parcel numbers that I wanted to link to county parcel database to get coordinates.
