The Global Fundamental Geospatial Data Themes were developed by the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UNGGIM) Working Group of the same name. The 14 data themes are clearly outlined in this StoryMap, with each theme’s description, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) they support, and maps and images that show their importance.

Implementing the themes will necessitate the integration of information from National Geospatial Information and Mapping Agencies, National Statistical Offices and other institutions to produce standardized, fundamental data, for use within Member States, and also, to support initiatives such as the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and its 17 SDGs. They are crucial for informed social, economic, and environmental decision making for sustainable development. They are also a key supporting foundation for overarching policies, such as the Integrated Geospatial Information Framework.
