The 2022 Esri User Conference is finally here! We on the Learn team hope you are having a great time learning about GIS workflows, either in-person or virtually. We wanted to take a minute to highlight our team’s favorite lessons. With over 300 lessons, it is tough to choose, but here are a few of our favorite lessons.

Heather is a product engineer and cartographer in Learn ArcGIS. She works on creating new lessons on various topics including cartography, oceanography, and data management.

Favorite lesson: Illuminate terrain with a custom hillshade

This is the perfect lesson for anyone interested in the artistic side of mapping. After following it, I had a lot of fun putting my new skills to use and experimenting to make my own maps with custom hillshading. The instructions show you how to find data for any part of the world and how to make it shine. I love making my own hillshades because it gives me a greater understanding of the landscape that I am mapping.

Nerrissa is a QA/QC specialist in Learn ArcGIS. She works on testing new lessons and updating our catalog of lessons for the latest product version.

Favorite lesson: Inspect assets with oriented images

Using images taken at different angles, managing and visualizing them on an app shared across organizations is a pretty cool and new concept for me. This could be helpful for property and infrastructure inspection, and for decision making using GIS. This lesson describes a generic Oriented Imagery workflow that can be adopted by any organization for their needs.

Bob is a senior product engineer on the Learn ArcGIS team. He works on creating new lessons, with a focus on Python and coding lessons.

Favorite lesson: Schedule automated near real-time data updates

I think this lesson is important because it shows how to create and update a hosted feature service in ArcGIS Online. This is an important workflow for many industries and has become more relevant for many in the era of COVID-19. The lesson shows how to configure a Python script to update the data, and how to use a Windows Scheduled Task to run the script on a regular basis. This is an approach that I use all the time for ArcGIS Online administrative tasks.

Patricha-headshot.pngPatricha is a QA/QC specialist in Learn ArcGIS. She works on testing new lessons and updating our catalog of lessons for the latest product version. Her focuses are public policy and demographics.

Favorite lesson: Perform Visibility Analysis to increase security

I love the combined themes of imagery and public safety. This lesson shows many capabilities of ArcGIS Pro and can be used to consider a wider array of topics like air safety, building regulations, and access around cities.

Delphine is a principal product engineer on the Learn ArcGIS team. She works on creating new lessons that showcase imagery, remote sensing, and raster workflows.

Favorite lesson: Site a sustainable shrimp farm

This is a great example of a suitability analysis, which is one of the fundamental GIS workflows. It also adds a modern twist to it with the use of the recent ArcGIS Pro suitability modeler.
