Is there a tool to convert from TIFF to MrSID?

MrSID is a format made by LizardTech. You will need to use one of their tools.

Hi Aaron,

though Timothy is perfectly right, the first question back should be: Why do you want to use MrSID? Which data (Aerials, Elevation, ...) and where is it going to be used on which devices? Yes, it offers huge storage compression  ON DISK - but for many uses today questions like CPU/memory use, data access optimization (tiles storage) and general availability are as or more important. Do you want to discuss that?

I am trying to Export DEM Raster (.tif) to MrSID using Global Mapper V15 & GeoExpress (from Lizard Tech)...Export is successful but there are no elevation values in the output. Is it the case after compression or there is a way to retain elevation values in MrSID format?

Is there a special reason you want to use MrSID? What is the purpose of this data after conversion? Where are you going to use it?

A (tiled) TIFF with LZW or LERC compression or something “modern” like MRF would be great to store elevation data!

In short: “complex” compressions algorithms like e.g. wavelength, namely like MrSID or ECW or even JP2, are compact for storage, but computational intensive to extract/use. They use up a lot of memory (for short periods of time) – which is usually no problem if e.g. used on a mobile device that has limitations on available disk storage – but it is “risky” when using on a server (blocking up your memory and cpu) and has no big advantage besides the disk space issue – which shouldn’t be an issue in most cases today.

For transport across the network of the “resulting image” the transport compression is much more important – and this is not depending on the disk file format but on the server used.

Thi si not to mention costs associated with some formats because for compression or server use there might be licenses needed from the patent holders.

In short - proper use of GDAL open formats and storage options - like tiled TIFF with a proper compression – is very very good, still compact and a save and interoperable way to go.

And as a direct reply to your question: If I recall correctly, only creation of MrSID files up to 50MB is free of charge, beyond that you need a lizardtech license … maybe someone who is more recent in information can help here …

Thanks for your reply.

I want to host the seamless 5m DEM of the country (original tif is approx 133gb) on internet and hence looking to have a compressed image in mrsid format..but after the conversion, the output .sid doesn't have elevation values..

If you want to make it public anyway, why not give it to Esri to include in the global elevation service.

Or tile it up and make it a cache to upload to ArcGIS Online via your account …

And for the MrSID – do you have a license from Lizardtech to convert that size? You’ll need!

I want to host it on an intranet and not internet. Apology for the mistake. I can consider buying a Lizardtech license provided it is confirmed that .sid will retain elevation information..
