Info on Image Server Extension please

Hello:

I have just installed ArcGIS Server 10. [edited] I asked my local distributor (ESRI Australia) for some more information on the Image Server extension - and they pointed me at the info that can be found on esri.com - which I had already found of course. No help there.

[edited] Can someone please help me? Specifically some technical information on using the two approaches for publishing image server extension services based on rasters in the file system (one with no referencing in the geodatabase, and the other with this put in the geodatabase). I simply want to use the ESRI Image Server extension, must I engage professional services just for this information? I know it is an 'extenstion' now, but I did pay for it. Thanks.

I think my confusion comes in because when I was setting up a new 10.1 ArcGIS Server the developers had asked for an "Image Server" not an Image Service or Image Extension and I believe we had an a whole physical server set aside to develop that. Does that sound off?

There is no 'Image Server' stand alone anymore.  So if they asked you for an image service, then you will need the Image Server Extension.  At 9.2 - 10, there was a completely different setup to perform and a toolbar.  Now the image server extension grants the ability to publish mosaic datasets and mosaic datasets can be created via geoprocessing tools in ArcToolbox. There is no need for a separate toolbar nor different install.

There are some workflow links to work with mosaic dataset.  It gives idea of what needs to be consider when you build the mosaic dataset,
