Raster functions failing to apply

Hi there, I'm a beginner working with ArcGIS Pro. When I try to apply raster functions, such as Hillshade, to a raster layer with (I think) elevation data, and click "create new layer", it returns an error message "Failed to apply Hillshade". I cannot find any troubleshooting advice on the raster functions. Any advice would be much appeciated.

You may just have and rgb image, essentially a picture.  Beyond the coordinates, your raster's values would need a "z" value representing elevation to use hillshade

Hillshade (Spatial Analyst)—ArcGIS Pro | Documentation

right-click on the raster layer in the table of contents and examine its properties to determine what type of raster you have.  If it is a 3 band raster, then it is probably a "picture", "image" and not a raster representing the spatial distribution of an attribute like elevation

... sort of retired...
