Good Afternoon Imagery and Remote Sensing User Group,

My name is Jonathan Sharp and I am new to this User Group. I recently was employed as a geospatial analyst at Wiser Imagery, where I worked on projects in coordination with the NGA.  After being furloughed and then subsequently laid off, I am in the middle of searching for new positions. Does anyone have any advice for job searching in this field?  I am getting frustrated with sending out job applications with with not much feedback or acknowledgement in return.  What are the best places/sites to look for a position in this field?  I have a degree in Geography and a graduate certificate in GIS. Any advice or possible leads would be greatly appreciated!

Best,

Jonathan Sharp

Hi Jonathan,

I recommend checking out LinkedIn. It is great way to see (and apply to) open positions, as well as a chance to make new connections within the GIS community.

Best of luck,

Hi Jonathan!  Welcome to the community.  Have you thought about using this time to enrich your resume with some new skills that may help you stand out?  A python coding class or specialized training in imagery or spatial analysis could help distinguish you compared to other Geography graduates.  What about seeking out a leadership role in a local chapter of one of the professional organizations, such as USGIF or ASPRS?  Networking is also important; try to attend a working group or conference in your field of interest and meet new people.  Many opportunities arise from mutual business connections.  Good Luck!

You might try checking out Civil Engineering firms. The regional and national firms all have GIS departments and the ones with natural resource departments will use imagery for their projects. Its easier to get a job if you make connections, as the others have said. If there is a company you are interested in, find a project manager/engineer on their website and call them to ask about a project they did (that you read up on so you ask relevant questions). Good luck!
