Our University of Delaware also holds a GIS Day UD GIS Day | Geographic Information Systems at University of Delaware which is in its 3rd year. It has been very successful as well.

Sharon, how do you help people who are faculty get involved in your GIS Day event?

We have 2 faculty members that sit on the committee who judge the competition. Undergrads and graduate students present their GIS project idea and a group of us evaluate the projects based on specific criteria. In past years we've had so many participants that we didn't have time for extra speakers. However, each year we've been successful in recruiting past recipients to share their GIS experience. I suppose we should expand their involvement somehow....this is our 6th annual GIS Day!

Luis & Nicole - Tell us more about how you celebrate GIS Day in your states.

HI Miriam!

Next week we are having 331 students from throughout the State of Delaware come to the Dover Air Command Museum to visit 17 stations all related to GIS in one way or another. The students will rotate from station to station. Most are hands-on. Some of the stations are: Fun with Google Maps, Dr. John Snow and the Cholera Outbreak, UD Drones, Xboxes and Sand, Earth Balloon, Kent County Paramedics Unit, DNREC Science Mobile Unit, Hands-on GIS, Flight Simulator.

There are different places around our area that celebrate GIS, not necessarily on GIS Day.  Most of the places, follow the same rule.  They invite people who use GIS as part of their work to create awareness.

Here is my 2nd question for Luis and Nicole.  What are you doing next week for GIS Day?

We have many volunteers for this event who assist with making our field trip a success. We will have 25 groups of students, so each group needs a volunteer to guide the approx. 15 students in each group.
