This year, the Eswatini National Trust Commission (ENTC) proudly celebrated GIS Day 2025 under the theme “The Geo-Generalist Era: Where Spatial Meets Everything.” Our event focused on demonstrating how geospatial technology is actively transforming conservation work across Eswatini. We showcased a wide range of practical GIS applications, from drone technology to advanced spatial analytics, all aligned with our national efforts to protect natural and cultural heritage.

One of the highlights was our demonstration of fixed-wing and multi-rotor drones used for high-resolution aerial mapping, habitat monitoring, fire assessment, and community land-use planning. Participants had the opportunity to engage directly with flight controllers and mission-planning tools, which helped demystify how UAVs strengthen our field operations. Alongside this, we displayed several analytical maps produced in ArcGIS, including patrol coverage models from SMART, fire-risk assessments, zoning plans, invasive species distribution, and development planning maps for chiefdoms within the Mbuluzi River Basin. These visual products sparked meaningful discussions about the growing role of spatial intelligence in conservation decision-making.

The day also created a powerful space for learning and collaboration. Colleagues from different departments interacted with drones, dashboards, handheld GPS devices, and thematic maps, exploring firsthand how GIS supports biodiversity management, law enforcement monitoring, ecosystem restoration, and community engagement. The enthusiasm from staff and visitors alike highlighted why GIS Day remains an important catalyst for building a culture of spatial awareness in Eswatini.

Overall, our GIS Day 2025 celebration reinforced the critical role GIS plays in protected area management and environmental governance. We are grateful to the global ESRI community for continually inspiring us with innovative tools, resources, and knowledge that help us tackle real-world conservation challenges. We look forward to strengthening our geospatial capacity and continuing to contribute to the broader global GIS community.
