The Bruce-Grey GIS Day StoryMap Competition is now in its fifth year—and it's better than ever!

Hundreds of Grade 7 and 8 students from classrooms across the Bluewater District School Board and Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board are exploring the power of GIS by building StoryMaps in teams of 2–3. Their entries will be judged locally, with the top 3 from each class advancing to regional judging. Final winners will be announced on GIS Day, November 19!

This year’s contest kicked off on September 17 with a live Microsoft Teams presentation to students, following a teacher orientation on September 10 and a deep-dive session at the Bluewater Summer Institute on August 20. For the first time, teachers received custom lesson plans, and students were provided with StoryMap planning templates—making it easier than ever to get started and stay focussed.

Each class is supported by a dedicated GIS Expert—a staff member from Bruce County, Grey County, or a local municipality—who visits classrooms to provide guidance and later helps judge the entries. The deadline for submissions is November 7.

🎉 Prizes are generously sponsored by Esri Canada, Bruce Power, Bruce County, Grey County, and Saugeen Shores.

We’re proud to see GIS education thriving in our region and grateful to all the teachers, students, and sponsors who make this possible.

Thank you for sharing your GIS Day event, @JustinKraemer, and for sharing your knowledge about the power of GIS to students! Please do share updates on how the event unfolds, along with any videos and photos. Incorporating a contest into your GIS Day plans is a fantastic idea, as it adds a competitive element and recognizes students who excel. StoryMaps is an excellent ArcGIS product to introduce to students, and I’m sure other Community members would be interested to see these StoryMaps!
