Hello,
Has anyone used the new GeoTagged Photos To Points tool to convert their geotagged photos to a point feature class? I'm curious if people are able to do this effectively with the new tool and what kind of devices are being used to capture the geotagged photos.

Thanks

Hi Drew;

I have just attempted to process 334 images taken with a Cannon Rebble XT3i.  The geotagging tool will process the batch and add the point layer to my map, but the projection is wrong and I cannot correct it.  I have tried to project, Define Projection, both to not avail. What is the problem?  I am using ArcMap 10.1 build 3035.

So the tool runs correctly but you want to change the spatial reference? It will output in WGS 1984, being that this is what your GPS is gathering the data in. You should then be able to use the Project tool (not define projection) to get it into the new coordinate system. What coordinate system are you trying to convert it to?

Hi Stacywood,
Will you please describe more about how the projection is wrong? Are the points on the map in a location that you do not expect? If you could provide one sample image (and the city/area where you think it should draw on the map) I would be happy to look into the problem.

All the best,

Hi,

I was curious if either you have found a solution to this problem?

I am encountering the same issue: When I add a photo with an embedded geolocation, the ArcMap 10.1 "Geotagged photos to Points" script does not create a point for the photo.  The geoprocessing results window states that the tool has run and a feature class has been created.  However, when I click on a row in the attribute table (where the photo name does appear), it zooms to an incorrect region of the world.  In addition, no visible point has been created.

I have replicated this problem with several different photographs, which were all processed using a standard graphics program.  I thought that perhaps the graphics program had stripped the geolocation from the photo, but looking at the EXIF data, the spatial location is still there.  In addition, I have tried changing the geoprocessing extent, which did not solve the problem either.  I have attached an example, if anyone wants to try this as well.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I'm trying to use the tool in ArcGis 10.1.  It will not give me an option to attach the photo. The option and box are greyed out.  Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks

Matt

Hello Matt, according to the tool help there are two requirements for attaching the photos to the feature class:

1. You must have at least a Standard license (Basic license does not support attachments).
2. The output feature class must be in a geodatabase of at least version 10.

Do you meet these requirements?

Thanks,
Drew

I think people are also running into the issue of not being able to use the html popup tool in layout view, at least from what I have gathered on a few random forums.  It took me awhile to come across a solution for my greyed out tool.

Thanks Drew.  I was confused between standard and basic.  Is there a work around?  I was using arc explorer to import the pics, create a layer package, and open in arcmap.  I switched cameras to a Casio and arcexplorer won't read the geotag data.  This is a very important part of my job so I need to figure something out.  Any suggestions would be great!

Thanks

Well I figured it out.  For anyone else with the issue follow the link and follow instructions.

For other beginners like me, when you type in (or copy and paste) the code "<img src=%s width='300' />" % r'!Path!' into the field calculator, be sure that python is selected in the parser box.  I tried it several times unsuccessfully before I got it to work.
