Import, Export, Copy & Paste or Load Data; Best practice moving between SDE and File geodatabase?

It seems I read some time ago that when moving files from one location to another location, that there was a difference between import and export.  That one option would bring it with relationships and the other option did not.  I can't find any documentation on this now. 

Best practice anyone?

If you simply Copy\Paste or use the Export\Import using XML Workspace document, all the related items are also carried along.

If you simply Export\Import ( tools like Feature class to Feature class), then those related items are not carried along.
