Esri’s massive open online courses (MOOCs) are back in 2025! You may be familiar with them, or this might be your first time hearing about them. Before we dive into the course schedule (I know you just cannot wait), let’s talk about what MOOCs are AND the benefits of participating.

What are MOOCs?

MOOCs are low-risk, no-cost online courses for anyone who wants to build new skills, grow professionally, and expand their horizons. They last for either four or six weeks, and each one goes in-depth to a unique GIS-related topic. Each MOOC contains expert videos, step-by-step exercises, free access to ArcGIS software, and a discussion forum to interact with thousands of peers from around the world. If you complete all sections of the MOOC, you receive a certificate of completion at the end of the course (which you can then share to your LinkedIn profile 😉).

What are the benefits of participating?

Let’s list out just a few:

  • In-depth knowledge into trending GIS and ArcGIS topics
  • Free access to ArcGIS software while the course is open
  • Get actual practice with in-demand skills and software
  • You can study whenever you have time, at your own pace
  • Get introduced to subject matters experts and peers from across Esri and the GIS community
  • Only lasts 4-6 weeks with 2-4 hours of study per week

If you want more insight into MOOCs and how to have a successful MOOC experience, check out this website and this blog post.

Hi @FedericoRiet_Sapriza, below are a couple of blogs written by Dr. Dawn Wright, Esri's Chief Scientist. She is the MOOC host and gives a bit more insight into course content in these articles. Hope that helps!

Please note that the articles reference MOOC dates from prior years. I included the season/year in which the articles were published below.
