Greetings @PindeFu ,

I hope this finds you well. I was wondering if we can expect a Getting to Know Web GIS 6th edition some time soon? With Web App Builder and Configurable apps being deprecated at the end of the year, there are couple sections of the 5th edition that are going to be obsolete. I use this book in my WebGIS Course, and it is awesome. I was just wondering if I need to come up with another plan, or if there would be a 6th edition coming out soon. Please let me know either way. Thank you for everything and have a delightful day.

Sincerely,

Joe Guzi

Greetings @JoeGuziCSCC

Thank you so much for reaching out. I’m glad to hear you’re using Getting to Know Web GIS in your course! I completely understand the importance of planning ahead for your class.

Yes, I’m currently working with Esri Press on the 6th edition. It will address deprecated and retired products, and will include updated technologies on Experience Builder, AI, XR, the new ArcGIS Online–based ModelBuilder, and many other recent advances. My tentative target is to publish by June 2026. I’ll keep this post updated with any changes.

Best regards,
Pinde

With Web AppBuilder and several classic configurable apps heading for deprecation, key sections in the 5th edition will soon feel outdated, especially in an instructional setting.

Esri Press has not officially announced a 6th edition of Getting to Know Web GIS yet, but based on the release cadence (roughly every 2–3 years), an update aligning with the 2025 Web GIS landscape (Experience Builder, Instant Apps, Map Viewer updates, etc.) is very likely in the works.

In the meantime, you might consider supplementing your curriculum with:

  • Esri’s Experience Builder documentation and tutorials

  • Esri Training site’s free courses on Instant Apps and Experience Builder

  • ArcGIS Developer documentation for modern JS API use

Greetings @PindeFu2 ,

Thank you for your response. That is great to hear that you are working on the 6th Edition. I wish you well as you continue to make progress on it. I really appreciate the tentative Target. That means I just need to band aid the few lessons that will be deprecated after December, likely using some of @VenkataKondepati's ideas, to get me through the spring and summer semesters of 2026, and then I will have the fall semester of 2026 to adjust my lessons for the 6th edition. I think I can make that work. Thank you for everything and have a delightful day.

Sincerely,

Joe Guzi
