I have a shapfile with simplified chinese characters.  I added a *.cpg (cp936) and the data displayed correctly in ArcMap 10.2.2

However, when I copied the shapfile with *.cpg to another computer, which was ArcMap 10.1, the data was not showing properly.

Is it possible to use the codepage file in ArcMap 10.1?

Best Regards,

Amy

according to the 10.1 help files, yes, but did you give the *.cpg file the same name as the shapefile?  ie test.shp and test.cpg  ArcGIS Help 10.1

The cpg file is the same name as the shapefile. Works in ArcMap 10.2.2, but not in ArcMap 10.1

A sample shapefile is attached.

There is at least one article on codepages in the knowledge base, perhaps there were some version changes, but you should have a look at this, sounds like it needs a conversion

Thanks for the info.

I have my user's locale set to Simplified Chinese, and it finally worked in ArcMap 10.1
