Hi All,

A client of mine had a question on whether or not there is any sort of a limitation on a number of raster tiles that may participate in a Mosaic Raster Dataset. If there is no such limitation per se, would there be any other draw backs or factors, that should be taken into a consideration, when creating a Mosaic Raster Dataset with a large number of tiles in it (i.e. over 175 thousand), given that there is enough processing power on the hardware.

Thanks in advance,
Max

Hi Max,

There is no documented number of rasters that can be added to a mosaic dataset. Since it resides inside a geodatabase, therefore size limits for geodatabases apply, but there is no documented limit to the actual number of rasters that can be added.

There is a default setting in the mosaic dataset that controls how many will be displayed at once and it is set to 20. As per the help documentation, "Maximum number of Rasters Per Mosaic??Prevents the server from mosaicking an unreasonably large number of rasters if, for example, the client zooms in to an overview scale in an nonoptimized image service dataset that has no overview tiles generated. The default is 20. "

Here is a link from online documentation on Mosaic dataset Properties

Hope this helps.

Thanks.
