Assigning and Maintaining spatial reference for a dwg to be used in Arc 10.1

Hi All,

Hoping someone out there can give me some direction with CAD - very much a beginner user, have not used for years.

The issue:

I have multiple .DGN files that have no spatial reference. I have brought these into AutoCAD, saved as a .dwg and the performed some rubber sheeting in order to scale and move in to the proper location. I used a feature class converted to a .dwg as my reference layer when performing the rubber sheeting.

Now I would like to take only the line work that I adjusted, save as individual .dwg to maintain all associated annotation, and bring into ArcMap. I have attempted to assign a coordinate system to the .dwg in CAD, however when I try to bring it into Arc I get nothing, as is it is not spatially referenced.

My question is - what is the best way to assign a coordinate system to this .dwg that will stick and allow me successfully bring into ArcMap?

I am using AutoCAD 2013 and ArcGIS 10.1

Any hints would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike
