Hi there, were can we get the icons and symbols used in the Solution (and more)

I want to make a new layer but keep it the same symbol family with the "open, closed, impacted, scheduled for closure" categories.

I would like to find a range of the symbols available on ArcGIS online but in all four colour-ways.

I could only find some of them in one colour-way eg,

and would like to spin up a hosted feature layer today. any downloads or pointers on where to find them

Thanks

Hi Melissa,

The additional colors were published from ArcGIS Pro by modifying the Government Building symbol in the Government Pro Style and were recently to support the new Coronavirus Response Solution and so are not yet in ArcGIS Online. You could recreate something the same or something similar in this way:

  1. In ArcGIS Pro, click View --> Catalog Pane
  2. In the Catalog Pane, select the Portal tab. Then select All Portal (the cloud)
  3. Search Government Pro Style. Right click on the the style, then click Add Style. Say Yes to the upgrade message.
  4. Open Catalog View --> Styles --> the Government Pro style
  5. Find the symbol you'd like to modify copy and paste it.
  6. Open the Details Panel in Catalog View (upper right hand corner of Catalog View)
  7. Click the Properties tab and you can modify the color

Once you have your new symbols, you can use them in a Pro map and publish a feature layer to ArcGIS Online with your new symbols. You won't use the symbols to modify existing hosted feature services, but you can publish new feature layers with the symbols.

I hope that helps!

I recently wanted to extend the AGOL Shapes symbol palette to include additional colors. Here's what I did-

Pick your base AGOL symbol

In your browser, right click over one of the symbols in the map and choose the inspect element option (assuming you are using Chrome as your browser)

The developer tools dialog will open and highlight where the symbol is represented in the HTML code base.

Right click on THAT and select open in new window (the language might be a little different- I can't recall)

In the new window, right click on the image and select Save Ass to save a copy locally.

Now, open the PNG in the image editor of your choice to adjust its color. You can use Photoshop but, in this case, I used the free program Fastone Image Viewer.

For Fastone Image Viewer, select the image, and then go to the Colors Menu and select Adjust Colors.

Under that dialog, you'll primarily just adjust the Hue slider to change the color of the image.

Repeat this process for all the posibilities you want to create your new PNG images.

Lastly, you'll need to upload these images to someplace publicly accessible and grab the URLs to their location(s).

Head back over to AGOL and then adjust the symbol and select the use an image option at the bottom:

Hope that helps!

Steve

Thanks for the timely replies!

Appreciate your time

I will try out the ArcGIS pro technique soon will have to iron out the workflow, but at the moment we are really only creating hosted feature layers while in AGOL (we planned for our Civil Defence to be AGOL as much as humanly possible) ..

It turns out what I worked on yesterday was similar to Steve's approach.

I copied down a purple symbol image, then using photoshop I filled the center in purple.  Then from the other various coloured symbols I photoshopped the white part out ..

I uploaded them to AGOL as public pngs so I could use them in the web map.

I've only needed four (so far), so fairly manageable. But perhaps ironing out a workflow where the custom symbol could be created in Pro and then saved up to AGOL.. the problem with having  to publish layers from pro and then publishing up is that you cant recycle them quickly on various webmaps with fast moving requirements and various scenarios Civil Defence have..

I know it's tricky   but the ESRI Solution was such a great place to start and without it we would not have gotten off the ground so quickly! thank you! I wanted any new layers to be part of the product family too and am happy with what I've been able to wrangle but perhaps, at least for now, I could look at using Pro as a symbol designer but still put them up on AGOL so I can have the best of both worlds.?

Check out the photoshop file (and my symbols), I'll post the actual map as soon as our Public Information Team releases it for the public.

Thanks Mike and Steve,. really appreciate the information and help! keeps me moving today!

Cheers

Melissa
