ArcGIS Ideas Submission Guidelines and Statuses

ArcGIS Ideas exists as an opportunity for community members to contribute to product innovation. By submitting feature requests in Esri Community, you make them available for others to support and build on by adding their own use cases. Gathering support demonstrates the value of a request, which elevates the Idea in product discussions. Your feature requests are important to us, and each of you brings valuable insights and perspectives to Esri Community.

What are Ideas?

An Idea is a suggestion for a new feature or improvement that doesn’t currently exist in the software. It creates an avenue for Esri product teams to understand what could make the products better support your goals and find creative solutions that align with the product roadmap. Please note that while we appreciate all your submissions, many factors go into implementing new features, and not all ideas will be pursued.

Ideas must include a Title, Description, and Label (if available).

(1) A clear title enhances discoverability, (2) a detailed description helps users relate and contribute support, and (3) a label assists our product teams in prioritizing and organizing requests.

Here is a guide to building the three form elements.

1. Title: This is the synopsis of your idea. The title should summarize your idea so others can easily understand what you're seeking. If others can find your idea, they can support it!

✔️ Good: Track ArcGIS Experience Builder interactions with Google Analytics

🔨 Needs Improvement: ArcGIS Experience Builder Widget

2. Description: The description is the most important part of the form. Here, you should clearly explain your feature request and describe how your work would be affected if it were implemented. We also want to know your role or industry to better understand your needs and develop an appropriate solution. Consider answering the following questions in the body of your idea:

  • What is your role or industry?
  • What would you like to be able to do in or with the product?
  • How will this feature impact your work?

✔️ Good: I am a GIS Project Manager, and I would like to use Google Analytics to create reports for my Experiences. I provide utilization statistics to senior leadership, and I already use Google Analytics with ArcGIS StoryMaps and ArcGIS Hub to create the reports. This would significantly streamline my reporting experience.

🔨 Needs Improvement: Provide Google Analytics option like in StoryMaps and Hub.

3. Label: Choose the pre-defined label that best fits the category of your idea. If you don’t have the option to include a label, it means the Idea Exchange you are in doesn't use labels, so you can proceed with the form.

We value your feature requests and take them seriously. Including the Title, Description, and Label, as described above makes a productive review possible. Ideas with complete information are more likely to be considered.

How to Submit an Idea

Before submitting a new Idea, please search Esri Community for existing solutions or check if the same Idea has already been posted by someone else. If you find a related Idea, vote for it and provide context about your use case in the comments.

  1. Go to ArcGIS Ideas.
  2. At the bottom of the page, find the Idea Exchange where you want to make a submission.
  3. Click Suggest an idea.
  4. Fill out the form. Remember to include a Title, Description, and Label as described in the ‘What is an Idea?’ section above.
  5. If you would like to receive notifications after posting, click on Follow this Idea on the top right corner of the Idea’s page.

Esri reserves the right to review, modify, delete, reprint, or redistribute all content that users contribute to Idea Exchanges.  For more information, please refer to the Community terms of use.

Considerations

  1. Bugs, Pricing and Licensing Requests, and Performance Issues are not a good fit for Idea Exchanges.
  • Bugs and Performance Issues should be reported to Technical Support for further investigation.
  • Pricing and Licensing feedback can be shared with your Sales Representative or Account Manager.
  1. One Submission = One Idea.  Please submit multiple ideas if you have more than one feature request. Feature requests may be related but should be voted on and considered individually.
  2. Write in English.  While Esri staff work around the world and speak many languages, our software development teams manage feature requests in English.

ArcGIS Idea Statuses

The following seven statuses can be applied to ideas across all Ideas Exchanges and are used to communicate with users about where the idea stands.

Open All ideas start here! We use the submission guidelines above to make sure these are ready for voting and commenting from the community.  Votes and additional feedback through comments help product teams to move the idea along.
Needs Clarification

Thank you for your idea! However, we need a little help with understanding the request before it can be open to voting.  We'll communicate to explain what action is needed in order to change the idea's status.

If you see this status on an idea that you didn't submit, feel free to chime in with your own examples in the comments.

For some guidance on how to craft an effective idea, refer to the submission guidelines above.

Already Offered You're in luck!  It is already possible to do what is being requested.  Ideas with this status should have a corresponding comment demonstrating the functionality or pointing to resources and they cannot receive additional votes.
Under Consideration You've got our attention!  We think this is a good suggestion and have entered it in our backlog.  This does not guarantee that the idea will be developed so we encourage the community to continue voting and sharing feedback which will help teams gauge user demand.
In Product Plan We're working on this!  This status does not guarantee that the functionality will be in the next release, but development work has begun. Release cycles vary by product so make sure to check the product life cycle information to get an idea of when to expect the next release.
Implemented Congratulations!  The idea made its way into the software. Implemented ideas cannot receive further votes.
Closed

Unfortunately, not all ideas are a good fit. These are not being considered at this time and will not be open to further voting.

Ideas may be closed for different reasons, and we will do our best to communicate and let the community know why this idea isn’t a good match for our current plans. Thank you for your contribution!

We sincerely thank you for your contributions to ArcGIS Ideas, which help us create better products and services to support your work. Go to ArcGIS Ideas to find the right idea exchange, and start participating!
