I am having an issue here i.e. I cannot see the symbols on 5th level sublayers. Please see the attached image where it says water after layer 3, there should be a symbol as well, which is not there. Any help please?

I did not figure out why your layer did not work the way you had it... I even tried to reproduce exactly you layer and the rendering and I could NOT get it to NOT display the legend.
I am surprised as well that is why I asked you, if you can kindly explain the reason why it happened.....and strangely it worked fine as per your suggestion. I got spaces in layer name like "A B 1-1000", although a silly question but do u think it matters? as now I am having trouble in identify field :)...... Strange World!
