Using custom ONLINE (not TPK) basemaps in Survey123

We have a custom basemap that we serve from our on-premise Portal. It is an image service. The image service uses the same security as our Survey123s. 

Creating a TPK using the content in the image service creates a package that is over 20GB (and takes a week!) - making offline use of it impractical. Besides, there is full wireless connectivity throughout the study area. 

What we'd like to do is for Survey123 to consume this basemap as the default map for when users collect their geolocations.

Is this possible?

Again - not offline, no TPKs.

Hi Dirk,

The map in Survey123 can only use tiled layers in Web Mercator projection.  If you can cache the image service, that could then be used by customizing the map types of the survey (much like the setting for a TPK).

This can be done via Survey123 Connect - refer to Include a map in your survey—Survey123 for ArcGIS | ArcGIS .  Note that currently the maps must be in the Web Mercator projection.

Can the maps they use have layers that are not cached, for example a map published with a basemap and a couple of hosted feature services?

Currently Survey123 is limited to cached map layers.  We are looking into more robust support of web maps in a future release.

That's good news thanks James. It will be good to see consistent map support across the Esri mobile apps including things like labels etc.

Can the Survey123 app consume the default basemaps of Portal that are not web mercator?

I can't them to show at all.
