I am unable to connect, within survey123 connect, to My surveys or the organizations surveys that were created in the web version of survey 123.  Nor am I able to push the survey from the website to be "edited in Survey123 connect".  The survey never loads in Connect. Using version 3.16.110

I recently installed survey 123 connect and have the connection to the organization's portal.  But there is no option under New Survey to select from "my surveys" or "organization".  Is there a connection I am missing?

When choosing Web vs Connect designer I consider:

  • Web designer is faster and easier to configure
  • Web designer easier for new Survey123 users to update (e.g. if you go on leave)
  • Web designer has some specific functionality, like thank you messages
  • I personally like the web-designer for web-based, public surveys. I like Connect for field-app surveys. So if I'm building for the browser or public, I use the web designer (unless I need specific functionality)
  • Connect has a lot more functionality. If you need this, or have a complex survey, use Connect.
  • Larger and longer-term surveys on field app may benefit from direct access to XLSForms e.g. version control
  • Connect functionality that's not supported in the webform also won't work in the 'edit' mode of the Survey123 website data review page as it uses web form

In short - quick, simple, easy web browser surveys = web designer. Larger, complex and field-app surveys = Connect. Others may have difference preferences. As an early user before the web-designer came out, I would be bias to using Connect, but both designers are quite good now thanks to the Survey123 teams' efforts

Going to New Survey will show you options to create a new survey. You can choose a template or target an existing feature service. It won't show you existing surveys.

Launching Survey123 Connect will default to the 'My Survey Designs' page. It will show locally stored surveys. If you're signed in, it will also show published surveys. You can download these to your machine by clicking the download icon. If you do not see a survey, check that you are a) signed in and b) the survey was published (not draft). Republishing this survey from Connect will then make it unable to be designed in the web browser.

So:

  1. Sign into Survey123 Connect.
  2. In the default 'My Survey Designs' tab, browse or search for your published survey.
  3. Download the survey
  4. Work on it and publish it. Or don't publish it - it will stay as a web survey.

Thank you for the response.  I was able to finally find the survey in the web designer that I needed.  But when I brought it into Survey 123 connect the layout was all wrong.  The grid question, page breaks and note sections did not look the same.  Would I have to manually setup each question, page break and note section again within the excel page or should the layout carry over from web designer to connect?

It sounds like you've downloaded the survey, opened it and got some formatting (not creating a 'new' survey from the service, which would only give field schema).

Downloading a web-designer survey into Survey123 Connect should bring across some of the survey design. Testing a simple survey I can see labels, messages, theme colors and other form components come across.

However I would not expect all components to come down smoothly. The web designer and Connect are different building tools. Some functionality is only available in either one and I would expect this to be reflected when you download and open the survey in Connect.

Yes I downloaded the survey which was created in web designer.  The biggest differences were no page breaks and the single choice grid questions have to be rebuilt within the excel.  this is something I will need to consider when building the survey (which platform to start and stay with).  Thanks for your input.
