Enable transitions between slides with the same media on sidecar slides

When using a sidecar format with multiple map views as slides, it is not an option to enable a transition between slides. When hovering over the transition button between slides it says, "There is no transition between slides with the same media". This can make the transitions between slides as a user scrolls seem clunky and disconnected. It would be nice to see the map transition smoothly to the next location or scale instead of a harsh disappear/reappear effect.

I believe what you are asking for is already possible. We call it map choreography and it is a very popular technique storytellers use when creating StoryMaps. You don't need to choose a transition, rather you use the same map across slides and set a different map view in each slide. When navigating through the sidecar the map smoothly moves to each new view.

Take a look at this article and let me know if this is what you are looking to do. It has details about how to use map choreography in your stories and links to several example stories that use this technique.

That is what I'm already doing and the transitions are still not smooth. If the map changes its extent, you have to watch the new area load, you can even see it in the John Nelson video. I'm thinking there should be a fade out/fade in and the map is already loaded. It's not very aesthetically pleasing watching things load.

Could you share a link to the video you are referring to?

Oh, of course. Sorry, I forgot there was a JN video in that blog. 🙂

I think what you are referring to is simply the normal experience of navigating a live map. This is typical for all online maps as it's not possible to load in information for all areas at once, so the information is loaded on demand. If you wanted to have a smoother transition between specific places, you could create different maps focused on those different areas. That way when you transition from one slide to another you aren't changing the extent of the same map, you are actually loading a new map. I think that might get a similar experience to the one you are after.
