Update definition timing out

I'm trying to update the definition of a layer inside of a feature service  

i'm trying to increase the maxrecordcount but when i click on update layer definition a page loads with this message 

{"error":{"code":504,"message":"Your request has timed out.","details":[]}}

I am getting the same in the Python API for ArcGIS, where it comes through as an Exception.
