how to write a simple HTTP query for solve route?

I have Arcgis server 9.3.1

how do you actually construct the query for JUST GETTING the distance of the route?

I have point a (x,y) and b(x,y)

I have been trying for ours but I can't seems to get the right distance for return the distance only.

anyone can help

is there anyway to get the distance only? It seems to always return a lot of data which needs to be formatted again.
