Hi,

I want to select features that are on the left side of a polyline.
Since I couldn't find a tool for this, I created a buffer on the left side of the polyline.
Unfortunately, the features that are within the buffer cannot be selected with the within tool of the
Select by location tool, as only the intersect tool works.
I don't want to also create a polygon from the buffer polyline.
So it is possible to select features that are bounded by a polyline.
Thanks for any hints.

If the selected features are points, the completely within option of the select by location tool should work.

One workaround no matter the feature type is to select features that are within a very short distance of the buffer, or perhaps you could use the touches boundary option though this may be the least successful option.

Thank you for your help, I tried all options of the tool select by location. My point features are completly within the polyline boundary. Only the intersect by distance is working but than it selects also the features on the right side of the original polyline that are in the distance. So I thought I have to look if the polyline boundary is closed I don't thing that the problem is that the point features are hosted feateares because the intersect tool works, strange.

If the targeted features are points you should be able to use the completely within option by using the buffer as the selecting feature.

If this is not working I would try using the data in a new aprx or by recreating the buffer. Sounds like something is not operating properly within the aprx or with the buffer.

Instead of using the tool from the ribbon, see if the using the actual geoprocessing tool gives a better result. Sometimes the tools on the ribbon can behave oddly.

I used different tools, in the end I used Et Geowizard to make a polygon out of my polylines after done this it worked, I will have a closer look why I have these problems. It would be fine if there would be an option just to select the features left or right side of a polyline.

Thanks again for your help

In the future, if the select tool isn’t functioning like it should as you must use the intersect option, to avoid features other than the points being selected, either turn off the layers you do not want selected or make those layers not selectable. This shouldn’t be a proper workflow but it definitely should avoid selecting features you don’t need selected.

...the problem I have, is that I want to select points of one layer/feature class which are only on one side of the street...so for me the tool left or right or north or south would be fine or a step more to create a simple buffer on the  left or right side of the street. I asked esri support if the restriction is that the tool "within" works only with polygons or if it is a bug  or the polyline must be closed or I did not realise somthing, I will see 🙂
