Calculate Geometry Attributes tool fails (ArcGIS Pro 3.5.x)

Running ArcGIS Pro 3.5.4 on an enterprise (SQL Server) geodatabase.

We just upgraded to Pro 3.5.4 and when using Calculate Geometry Attributes the tool fails (error message below). Seems tied to the new edit-session model introduced in Pro 3.5. I have tried enabling both an editing session and an editing workspace, as well as disabling needing to enable editing but no matter what I do the tool fails. It's like it can't recognize that I have an editing session active. I can manually type in the cells so I can confirm its not a versioning or permissions issue.
