It happens to the best of us - you are busy with a bunch of stuff, you get an email from the client with Final_final_rev3_Final.gpkg and you think it would be a good idea to create a new feature class to import it against; just so you don't break the final version in your FGDB.
You go through the process to create a new & special schema with a few choice fields to cover all bases, click Finish and get the dreaded " Go away, I'm locked because you are busy Editing. Remember?"
There are many other processes/tasks/tools that don't like it when you try to use them while editing. It feels to me as if most will tag you along until they have to commit the changes you requested, and then just fail out with a 'Sorry Dave'. No option to just a wait a minute so you can close the editing session and come back to the task. It is usually a full-on 'Go back to start, don't charge the client $200 and forget about beating the traffic today'.
Please add a global visual cue to Pro that makes it obvious that you are in an Editing session. It can be something like a contrasting colour bar in the Contents. We can workshop a few concepts once this goes into the Product Plan.
Brownie points for making the colour and emphasis a user option so I can make mine Arial and bright red
If I could have a red box appear around my map viewer map when the editing tools are open that would make me very happy.
Hi @RTPL_AU , Interesting idea. I'm just curious, which tool you were using that didn't inform you of the active edit session?
@Scott_Harris All the tools you haven't placed a notification into 🤣. Ask the Pro developers for a list.......
Typically things to do with direct operations on a FGDB such as creating a new FC, etc.
There is no way to see if an Edit session is live unless you have the Editing ribbon open or the Enable/Disable Editing button added to your QAT - but with the 'Extreme Subtle' design language in Pro, neither are 'at a glance' indicators; more a 'let's refocus our eyes and go an look for something'.
Many GP tools do show it (haven't used every single one so cannot say all) but other processes in the app need to have the same; or you can add a global indicator.
The key takeaway is that I would love to see Pro be more intuitive with it showing what is important at a glance, and reducing the effort needed to do or find things.
Introduce KPIs for number of clicks and mouse moves/scrolls. Introduce KPIs around required eye movement, especially for those using large/multiple monitors doing many varied tasks a day.
See Idea about having better visual contrast and being more accessible.
See Idea about open sourcing the UI. Have more smart people help making the UX better with a better UI design and have Esri devs focus on the GP and toolkit side of things.

This is the part that I'm most interested in. If there are other processes besides geoprocessing tools or editing tools that are doing editing, they definitely should be detecting and indicating the status of an active edit session. I was under the impression that you recently encountered this scenario, but it sounds like you are speaking more generally about including a global indication of the status of the edit session. Thanks for the additional details @RTPL_AU
