In the maplex dialog of ArcGIS Desktop, when you choose the 'Straight within the polygon' position option for a polygon layer, there is a checkbox for 'Try horizontal position first'. It would be nice to have a checkbox for 'Try horizontal or vertical positions first' or 'Try vertical position first' and then maybe the horizontal and vertical check boxes could be checked.
