Microsoft has unfortunately fragmented the XLS datatype into several formats and only a couple of them are supported. In particular support is needed for the XLSB format (binary) and XLSM (which is just a regular XLS file with macros).
In particular this is anoying for ArcGIS Explorer that is often distributed to users with different formated Excel files.
