Updated

ArcGIS (Desktop, Engine) 10.6.1 General Update Patch was just made available today (December 5, 2019).  ArcGIS 10.6.1 users are encouraged to install the general update patch.

For the best stability and performance, Esri® also recommends 10.6.1 users install all outstanding 10.6.1 patches, specifically the following:

ArcGIS (Desktop, Engine) Text Performance Patch
ArcGIS Desktop 10.6.1 Exporting Data From a Layer Patch
ArcGIS Desktop Dialog Initialization Performance Patch
ArcGIS Desktop TLS Patch

Take away message first: If you know anybody using ArcGIS Desktop 10.6.1, share this with them and make sure that they install the Buffering Degenerated Polygon patch.  Don't be fooled by the name.  Whether working with buffers or not, everybody running 10.6.1 needs to install this patch as the crash is often caused by editing.

Backstory: Back in November last year we made an Announcement out on the ArcGIS Blog, providing some information about why it is important to provide at least a valid email address when submitting error reports.  While we wanted to provide some education around how the error reporter works and what we do when we receive these reports, that announcement used the Buffering Degenerated Polygon patch as a specific example where we were seeing a high number of crashes reported with no email address, meaning no way for us to contact those users.

In January this year we posted another blog about improvements in the error reporter called ArcGIS Desktop Error Reporter Learns Its Manners that also explains why it is important to include a valid email address if you ever experience a crash.

We're still seeing a very high number of users crashing in ArcMap 10.6.1 and submitting the error report with no email address.  The crash that they are seeing is fixed in 10.7 and with a 10.6.1 patch if they are not able to upgrade.  But we can't tell them that, because we have no contact details.

Here is where I'm personally asking for your help.  If you have friends, friends of friends, or heck, even enemies, who are using ArcGIS Desktop 10.6.1, please let them know that they need to install the Buffering Degenerated Polygon patch.

Please share far and wide.  Email this blog link, Tweet it, Facebook it, pull your phone out and show it to your co-workers.  I want to see the numbers from this crash go down.

I appreciate your help!

I don't suppose a rename of the patch or an "INSTALL ME NOW" patch that redirects to that cryptic original would help solve some of the disconnect

Just to add legitimacy to Kory Kramer‌'s claim, I have been contacted by developers after submitting crash reports with my contact info several times: once on a weekend, went something like "We're releasing this SP on monday, can you test this?". I don't, however, have 100% success on repro steps on the crashes, which is usually why they're contacting me. So if you include those in the crash report UI......

So the same person that invented the Elevator Door Close Butting did not invent the Submit Crash Report Button. If you've ever pushed that button in an elevator, you'll know that it's only wired up to a social experiment to see how impatient elevator users are, it has nothing to do with closing the door.

This is a candidate for a social media post from ESRI, which could "Trend".....

My favorite recent fix is the DIP patch, ArcMap was driving me crazy with its slow opening layer properties these last two years (10.5.1 problem). FINALLY got that fix a few months back.

Kory Kramer‌ I see the same bug is fixed for 10.5.1, and our 10.5.1 users are experiencing a lot of freezes and crashes (we have not implemented the patch that Curtis Price mentions, yet).  Do you know if it address the same issue as this blog post suggests, but for 10.5.1?  Or if the the issue this blog post refers to is also relevant for 10.5.1? Thanks!

This blog is about one, specific crash in 10.6.1: https://support.esri.com/en/download/7636.  I looked to see if I could find any crash reports for 10.5.1 for you, John, or Stephanie and did not see any.  Please remember to include a valid email address and description and submit error reports.  More on that here if you didn't read it already: https://www.esri.com/arcgis-blog/products/arcgis-pro/announcements/arcgis-desktop-error-reporter-lea...

Otherwise, if you are consistently experiencing a crash, the best route will be to work with Technical Support.

Thank you.

The 10.5.1/10.6.1 DIP patch is not related to any crashes, just slow operation of any dialog that has to load fonts (which unfortunately includes the layer properties dialog, probably the most commonly used dialog in ArcMap!

10.5.1 is getting so old I would recommend considering an update. Though the reason for your crashes may be something unrelated to version. The mention of a lot of freezes makes me wonder whether you want to look into network file access issues. I highly recommend opening a tech support incident, I think they are awesome and in my experience if they can’t fix the issue they pretty much always can identify the problem and help me with a workflow around it.

Yeah, the government does not allow outbound reporting from their systems as far as we can tell.  And it would be a number of other users you would see if they did.  We'll probably recommend still applying the patch as we confirmed the systems dont have it, but are pretty certain there is a discrepancy between citrix version and ArcGIS desktop requirements that are probably at least part of the problem.  Thanks for the info!

If the reports can't be sent through the error report dialog, are you able to email them?
