Where is Map View Classic? Is this still available? The button I usually click to work in that view is not showing up. I

Hi @DebapriyaPaul, I just came across a separate scenario where not having the ability to create templates is a problem. No edge case or bug. Regular workflow.

If I update a view layer, the templates wont include any new attributes I expose. Duplicating a previous template doesn't help.

EDIT: Has Template management been removed from Map Viewer Classic? I can't find it at all anymore.

Hi @BlakeMorrison, Template management is available in Map Viewer Classic. We can manage templates in Map Viewer Classic when we are working with an editable hosted feature layer, which we own.

Here's a screen capture:

For the issue you are facing:

  • Are you working with a hosted feature layer in Map Viewer Classic?
  • Is the layer editable?
  • Are you the owner of the item?

Please feel free to attach a screen capture of what you see, I'd be happy to look into it.

I think my reason for needing the Classic Templates Managment, atleast in this scenario, has been solved. That was my bad. I refollowed a workflow and got things to work via Field Maps Designer.

But for what it's worth, I'm still unable to access Template Management in Map Viewer Classic. It appears to be the same issue as this post: https://community.esri.com/t5/arcgis-online-questions/was-quot-manager-quot-button-for-field-maps-in...

I can confirm I am the owner of the item, it is a hosted feature layer (I've tried multiple maps and multiple items), and it is editable.

Thanks for sharing the screen capture, @BlakeMorrison. That is odd.

  • How was the Feature layer (in the screen capture) published?
  • Did you notice this behavior recently?
  • Is any other member in your ArcGIS Online organization experiencing the same issue?
  • From your response, I understand that the behavior is not specific to any specific item, but you can reproduce it with any editable feature layer that you own?
  • What editing permissions are set on the layer? Could you share a screen capture of the item details page > Settings > scroll down to Feature layer (hosted)?

I think it's probably pointless to try and work out why a deprecated product has stopped working. It seems obvious that they're not worried about compatibility anymore. This is very reasonable.

This is however another situation where a 'Create' button in the new Templates Management available via Field Maps Designer or Map Viewer, like the previous product always had, will preserve feature parity.

For what it's worth, I contacted tech support to check if they could help or had heard of the issue. They said a 'Create' button would be a good feature to implement and I should post about it in the Arc Online Ideas forum.

Thank you for sharing the screen capture.

I ran a test with a hosted feature layer (with identical editing permissions). I can confirm that I see the Manage option in Map Viewer Classic while editing the layer.

Would you mind emailing me a sample Feature layer URL to investigate the behavior? It could be a test service and does not have to be shared publicly. My email would be dpaul@esri.com

As a side note, in Map viewer, adding the capability to Create a template is in the roadmap. We are working towards achieving functional parity with Map Viewer Classic before it retires in Q1 2026.

I'm sorry. I don't have time to mess around with that sort of thing. I think you're barking up the wrong tree anyway. I don't have access to templates management for any of my FS via Classic. So either all my feature services broke or changed in exactly the same way, all at once, without my action and didn't break anything else about their function. Or just one thing changed: Map Viewer Classic.

Can I ask: Have you spoken to the Classic team? Is there a detailed changelog for Classic we can review?

Edit: With a little extra searching it appears that as of Q1 2025 updates, Classic will not be available to certain user accounts. I would suggest that if somewhere behind the scenes someone has the ability to switch off functionality per user type, then my user type has been switched off for templates access via Classic. This is still odd though, as I am definitely an admin with a paid account and support access.

Edit2: I'm still thinking about this and it's almost definitely not anything to do with the FS, right? It's gotta be the webmaps or Classic. Templates aren't associated with FS, they're associated with webmaps that contain the FS and relate directly to the symbology set in the webmap. So just to reinforce, I think you're barking up the wrong tree trying to find something different about any one FS. If I'm wrong, please tell me.

Ok, so this is apparently a known bug. The potential confusion I'm having is that I'm looking for a template in a webmap, not in a FS. You can totally manage templates of FS in classic. You can no longer manage templates of a webmap. This is what has changed.

You may have been trying to communicate this. I can't tell.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, @BlakeMorrison . In the February release this year, Map Viewer Classic has only been removed from new organizations, trials, and public accounts. This change has not impacted any existing organizations or user types specifically.

Map Viewer Classic Roadmap for Retirement: https://www.esri.com/arcgis-blog/products/arcgis-online/announcements/map-viewer-classic-roadmap-for...

We have identified the issue that's causing the Manage templates option not to display only when a Web map is opened in Map Viewer Classic. We are currently investigating the behavior.

Map Viewer Classic still supports configuring feature templates for a hosted feature layer by simply adding the editable feature layer (as the owner/Administrator) > Edit > Manage > Configure properties > Save changes to the layer.

Create feature templates in Map Viewer Classic: https://doc.arcgis.com/en/arcgis-online/manage-data/manage-feature-templates.htm#ESRI_SECTION1_AF343...

With Map Viewer Classic retiring in Q1 of 2026, I encourage you to try configuring templates in Map Viewer. We're actively enhancing the experience, with more improvements on the roadmap. Please share any key workflows you're currently using in Map Viewer Classic, we appreciate your feedback.

@DebapriyaPaul, I have no idea how to use Map VIewer Classic. I was not working with ESRI products when it was a thing. I have always used Map Viewer for everything unless I can't do it in Map Viewer and have to revert to Classic.

With respect, I don't think this is a bug, this is a planned functional change that hasn't been communicated. Please if I'm missing where this has been communicated, let me know, it would solve the situation the last couple times I've posted to the forums.

Otherwise, thank you for trying to help.
